Try Science: Save Your Skin

5/28/2012 By:

Try this experiment from Chemistry for Life to find out how sunscreen works and how it saves your skin. By using an apple as a substitute for your skin, you can find out how the sun would affect your skin by being out in the sun for several hours. This experiment is laid out clearly for an upper elementary student to follow.  The explanation of what is happening is very understandable, and parent/teacher tips are provided which suggest variations on the experiment to encourage the development of different hypotheses depending on the variation. Stay safe in the sun, and if you can’t use an apple as a surrogate, be sure to slather on the sunscreen.
