Use this unit from from Annenberg’s Democracy in America to help students understand media, the role of media in a democracy, and why a free and independent press is crucial to our political system. A brief history of the press and politics discusses muckraking, yellow journalism, and freedom given to the press by the First Amendment. The lesson includes a 30-minute video and suggested discussion questions, readings from Alexis de Tocqueville, John Milton, David Hume, and the New York Times, and a critical thinking activity.
