Miami Dade Public Schools Among First to Adopt iLit, New Core Reading Program for Struggling Readers on iPad

ORLANDO Jan. 30, 2013 – Taking a bold step toward closing this country's adolescent literacy gap, Pearson today launched iLit, its new core reading program for struggling readers. Featured at FETC 2013, iLit is the first and only complete instructional solution built and delivered on iPad, offering each student personalized learning support based on their own instructional needs, engaging interactivities, and built-in reward systems that motivate students and track their progress.

"To transform struggling readers into successful students, we need to move far beyond the discussion of whether or not technology should be in schools," said Pearson Senior Vice President for Accelerated Performance Solution, Doug McCollum. "Our discussion must be focused on 'how' mobile devices can change the learning landscape, inspire struggling learners and, ultimately, ensure that all students develop the firm foundation in literacy skills requisite for graduation and success in college and career. iLit is illustrative of Pearson's deep investment in developing mobile solutions that will support schools in achieving this critical goal."

The nation's fourth largest school district, Miami-Dade Public Schools, will be among the first in the country to implement iLit. Through its iWorld! initiative for English Language Learners, students will develop their literacy skills with this powerful tool. To prepare for this implementation, the district is collaborating with Pearson to train its English as a Second Language teachers on iPad as well as hosting "iSummit," a two-day conference style training to prepare students to learn on the mobile devices. Pearson developed this training for Miami-Dade teachers and students to ensure that they are prepared to hit the ground running when they begin learning with iLit this spring.

Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade Public Schools, opened iSummit saying, “450 students throughout 12 schools and 37 teachers are involved in this project. All paid for by a federal grant bringing digital technology in partnership with Pearson and Miami- Dade County Public Schools. The winners are the kids, those who are learning English right here, in Miami Dade.”

In an iLit classroom, each day begins with the students reading a self-selected title from the thoughtfully curated high-interest leveled library, which culls Pearson’s vast collection of Penguin, DK, Adapted Classics and other texts. The daily instruction allows for gradual release of control through explicit guided reading, modeling the fluency and meta-cognition of a successful reader while teaching important skills and strategies to fill reading deficiency gaps.

iLit recognizes that reading comprehension cannot be measured only by multiple-choice tests. Students must also be able to summarize a text’s key points. By leveraging Pearson’s award-winning proprietary technology learning solutions, iLit provides students real-time feedback and coaching on informal summary writing and formal essays. Scaffolded hints and personalized feedback allow the students to write and re-write independently, practicing skills in a safe engaging environment before submitting for grading. It is the only reading intervention program with technology-based writing coaching.

When teachers logon to iLit, they find a convenient dashboard where they can make individual, small group and class assignments as well as manage student activity and monitor progress. The program guides the teacher through the entire iLit learning process starting with independent reading moving through vocabulary study, reading aloud, discussing what they have read and wrapping up the day's literacy lesson.

iLit was designed based on the proven instructional model found in the Ramp Up Literacy program, which demonstrated students gaining two years of growth in a single year. Its renowned and diverse authorship team includes:

§ Roger Bonair-Agard, Author and Educator

§ William Brozo, Professor of Literacy, Graduate School of Education, George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.

§ Kelly Gallagher, English Teacher, Magnolia High School, Anaheim, Calif.

§ Sharroky Hollie, Assistant Professor, Teacher Education California State University, Dominguez Hills

§ Sharon Vaughn, Teacher, Teacher-Educator, Researcher and Author
