Vote Today for Tomorrow’s Leaders in Finalist Round of “If We Were President” Contest

Five Creative Classroom Projects Vie for 2013 “Inauguration” in WeAreTeachers and Pearson Program Designed to Immerse Students in Civics Education, Build Collaboration and Problem-Solving Skills

NEW YORK – Nov. 1, 2012 – As the 2012 Presidential Election campaign draws to a close, a new crop of candidates has emerged from five elementary schools around the country – finalists in the “If We Were President” contest, sponsored by Pearson and WeAreTeachers. Now the public has until November 9 to view these stellar projects at http://www.weareteachers.com/grants-contests/grants/pearson-election-contest/vote/ and cast their votes for the class that they think has the creativity and vision to lead the nation. The winner will be announced on Nov. 16 at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference in Seattle.

The finalists are:

  • Frank C. Martin International K-8 Center, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Fla.: Teacher Sandra Davalos’ First-Grade Class
  • Smithfield Elementary School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, N.C.: Teacher Heather England’s Third-Grade Class
  • Roberts Elementary School, Upper Merion Area School District, King of Prussia, Penn.: Teacher Eden Grassi’s Third-Grade Class
  • Canton Intermediate School, Canton Public Schools, Conn.: Teacher Rachel Caron’s Fourth-Grade Class
  • Yoakum Intermediate School, Yoakum Independent School District, Texas: Teacher Alexandra Schoenemann’s Fifth-Grade Class

Pearson Senior Vice President Lynda Cloud said, “When we reviewed these entries, we were amazed by the way these young leaders identified the important issues that face our nation today and the creative solutions they have for tackling them. Best of all, they presented their campaign promises in energetic and thoughtful presentations that made us sit back in the midst of all of the current election noise and think about what really matters to today’s kids and their families. I urge everyone to view the projects and log on to vote.”

These elementary students and their talented teachers completed their creative projects using free election resources, activity packs and interactive programs from Pearson’s K-12 Teach the Election 2012 site and the Online Learning Exchange™ Election Series site.

The winning class will receive a grand-prize package that includes a Classroom Inauguration Day Party and possibly even visits from “past presidents.” Plus, the winning teacher will receive a $500 gift certificate from Pearson as well as an iPad 2.
