WeAreTeachers and Pearson Sponsor Contest Promoting Civic Engagement
NEW YORK – Sept. 18, 2013 – Tomorrow’s leaders are in school today, which is why Pearson and WeAreTeachersare launching a national contest to discover the best lessons for teaching what it means to be an active, engaged citizen. Building on the goals of the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards, which will be published this fall, the National Civics Education Contest will award teachers whose outstanding civics projects, ideas and activities capture students’ interest and motivate them to be informed about the social and political world around them.
Developed by state leaders in social studies education and supported by 15 professional organizations representing four core social studies content areas: civics, economics, geography, and history, the primary purpose of the C3 Framework for Social Studies State Standards is to provide guidance to states and districts on the concepts, skills and disciplinary tools necessary to prepare students for college, career and civic life.
A panel of experts will review the contest entriesand select three grand prize winners to receive free trips to the 2013 National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) conference in St. Louis. Three merit prize winners will receive 15 GB iPod Minis and $50 in Pearson resources.

Winners will be announced on Oct. 16, 2013.
Three grand prize winners will receive a trip to the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) conference in St. Louis, Mo, Nov. 22-24, 2013, including airfare, two nights’ accommodations, meals and full conference registration fee. (Approximate value $1,500)
