FundingFactory Supports School Technology End-of-Life Management Plans

ERIE, Pa. (June 24, 2013)— According to a 2012 survey of FundingFactory participants, 60 percent of school technology coordinators do not have an end-of-life management plan for tablets or mobile devices being used in the school. Even more, it is estimated that approximately 70 percent of mobile devices used in classrooms across the country will only last between two and five years.

FundingFactory, the nation’s largest fundraising by recycling program for schools and nonprofits, showcased its research in the infographic No Tablet Left Behind, the E-Waste Impact of 1:1 Devices, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of developing a district or school policy that outlines the plan for proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste). FundingFactory urges school technology staff members to take the lead within their districts, and set an example for students and the community, by establishing an end-of-life management plan for technology.

Michelle Halla, classified technology support for Manteca High School in Manteca, Calif., and Diana Utroske, technology specialist at Corona Creek Elementary School in Petaluma, Calif., have taken it upon themselves to develop e-waste recycling plans for their schools. Both schools collect and recycle small electronics through FundingFactory and use local electronic recycling centers to dispose of larger technology.

Halla explained that the e-waste recycling process at Manteca High School is quite straightforward, and would be simple for most schools and districts to duplicate.

“We track all of the technology purchases for the school, and once those devices reach six years of use they are evaluated by the district IT department,” Halla said. “If the technology is in need of replacement it is sent to the district surplus room and eventually dropped off at the local recycling center. It’s a simple plan that works quite well for our school.”

Utroske said that Corona Creek Elementary School, a FundingFactory participant since 2002, incorporates parents and the local community in its recycling efforts. This communitywide involvement helps spread awareness of e-waste recycling and, at the same time, raises money for new technology at the school.

“The parental and community involvement have helped Corona Creek experience continued success with FundingFactory,” Utroske said. “We have earned more than $25,000 since joining the program, using the money to purchase new software, printers and other technology for the school. FundingFactory is a significant source of funding for new technology, and it’s great to see the parents and community recognize that need through their e-waste donations.”

The FundingFactory program is free, and enables schools and nonprofit organizations to exchange e-waste for cash or points redeemable for new technology or classroom products. By participating in FundingFactory, educational institutions, such as Manteca High School and Corona Creek Elementary School, play a key role in reducing the amount of toxic e-waste going to landfills, while earning money for the schools.
