SIIA to Release Qualitative Mobile Study at Education Business Forum

Washington, D.C. (Dec. 11, 2013) - The Education Division of the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for the software and digital content industries, released a Qualitative Study on Mobile Learning during a press briefing at the Education Business Forum in New York today. The study of educators’ mobile challenges and opportunities indicates opportunities for growth in the use of mobile technology in schools.

The results, gathered from interviews with nine educators, demonstrate the successes and difficulties faced by individual teachers in their integration of smart phones and tablets for educational purposes. This qualitative study was conducted primarily through phone interviews with participants.

“The enthusiasm for mobile technology in the classroom is exciting, as teachers adopt this new technology,” said Market and Policy Analyst for the SIIA Education Division Lindsay Harman. “Many were impressed with the opportunities to increase student engagement through the use of mobile learning.”

SIIA piloted the project in conjunction with Andrew Pass, CEO of A Pass Education, to understand how teachers were using mobile technology in the classroom. SIIA member companies are increasingly transitioning to mobile delivery, and SIIA believes it is important to understand how these tools are implemented in real classrooms.

“The mobile market is growing and educational technology companies are introducing more content in mobile platforms. The speed of implementation makes publishers, parents, teachers, and other members of the industry hungry for information,” said Pass. “This report shows a slice of the impact from the point of view of nine educators using it in their classrooms.”

The stories in this report show unique challenges and successes in the implementation of mobile technology in the classroom. SIIA member companies and others can learn from these studies showing how mobile technology is actually being implemented.
