CASIO TEAMS UP WITH STUNT SCIENTIST STEVE WOLF TO SHOWCASE MATH AND SCIENCE IN MOVIE STUNTS AND SPECIAL EFFECTS

8/22/2012 12:00:00 AM

DOVER, NJ (AUGUST 22, 2012) – Casio America, Inc. announced today it is partnering with Steve Wolf – stunt scientist, author and producer – in support of the company’s educational mission to foster a positive student-centered learning environment for math and science instruction through the use of appropriate tools. Through this partnership, Wolf will demonstrate how movie stunts can help students gain a better understanding of math and science.  Wolf now serves as a Science Advisory Teacher and utilizes Casio’s educational technology, specifically the PRIZM™ during science conferences, school presentations and “STEM in the Movies®” appearances.

"I'm thrilled and grateful to be able to share the math and science behind movie stunts with kids.  Stunts are one of the best ways to show kids how STEM is exciting, and Casio's generosity and calculators make that possible,” said Wolf. "Casio is meaningfully supporting the comeback of math and science education in the United States, and that means a great deal to me."

Wolf uses math and science every day to solve the challenges of creating exciting movie effects. With STEM in the Movies, Wolf highlights the essential role of math and science in the making of movie stunts and special effects. This offers students a unique opportunity for cross-curricular learning and for developing skills that can be used in all walks of life.

“We are honored to have someone of Steve Wolf’s caliber partner with Casio to help bring science and math to life beyond the classroom,” said Andrew Zweig, general manager of Casio’s Consumer Products Division. “We hope to spark students’ interest in math and science by working with Wolf to show students the electrifying connection between these subjects, movie stunts and special effects.”

Casio’s PRIZM graphing calculator represents the latest innovation in classroom technology. With conventional graphing calculators, students learn by inputting equations to create graphs. PRIZM includes Casio’s proprietaryPicture Plot technology, which enables users to perform meaningful mathematical equations on top of real-life images, transforming how technology is used in the classroom.

"Stunt work involves managing calculated risks and Casio's PRIZM makes the calculating a whole lot easier,” said Wolf. "The key to improving is understanding what you've done, and building on that knowledge.  The ability to import video into the Casio PRIZM, and then run a detailed analysis of movement, has allowed my stunt team to understand complex movements, and that's made our work much safer."

Wolf studied communications at Tulane University, and received a B.A. in Writing and Literature, with an emphasis on Shakespeare, from Columbia University in New York City. He has been producing film, TV and live events for 25 years. He is the President of Special FX International, and founder of “Science in the Movies” – a non-profit organization that helps kids master science through the use of the entertainment industry’s ability to capture attention.
