Lexia Learning Releases Lexia Reading Core5 for Students of All Abilities in Grades Pre-K–5

BOSTON — July 18, 2013 —As schools adopt more rigorous academic standards, including the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), education leaders are looking for instructional resources that can support the deeper learning that the new standards demand. Lexia Reading Core5™, the first pre-K–5 technology-based reading program designed specifically to help students of all abilities meet the CCSS, is now available via web browser, as an app for the iPad® and as a desktop download. Developed by Lexia Learning, the program and its supporting printed materials provide structured, sequential, scaffolded instruction that empowers students in grades pre-K–5 to accelerate their mastery of skills and achieve higher levels of proficiency.

Built upon Lexia’s nearly 30 years of research in reading education, Lexia Reading Core5 expands the scope of the award-winning Lexia Reading® program by covering six areas of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, automaticity/fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

“Lexia Reading Core5 is the most comprehensive, technology-based reading skills program available,” said Lexia President and CEO Nick Gaehde. “It can support the range of student needs—from struggling to advanced learners—across an entire pre-K–5 setting. This single system provides both instructional content and assessment data, offering districts a consistent approach in managing reading instruction in each school and across the district.”

Although Lexia Reading Core5 just became available in July, educators have taken note of its rigorous technology-driven and teacher-directed instruction and are making it their reading program of choice for the 2013–2014 school year. Numerous Lexia customers across the country are migrating to Lexia Reading Core5 including:

· Alamogordo Public Schools (N.M.)

· Anchorage School District

· Archdiocese of Denver

· Conway School District (Ark.)

· San Jose Unified School District

· The School District of Philadelphia

"We have been using Lexia for many years in Anchorage, and we are very enthusiastic about migrating to Lexia Reading Core5," said Jan Maki, multi-sensory instructional coordinator at Anchorage School District. "It

was important to us that the program is aligned to the Common Core Standards, but also important that the program can help motivate students, engage parents and offer teachers the resources to monitor student progress and provide immediate support when needed."

The program creates personalized learning paths for every student, providing explicit instruction and immediate corrective feedback. Students work independently in 18 levels of fun, self-paced activities that take them on an adventure around the world. Throughout the program, students interact with complex text as they develop critical listening and reading comprehension skills.

If a student struggles with a particular activity, he or she is presented with a scaffolded approach to mastering the relevant skill. If the student continues to struggle, he or she receives skill-specific, explicit instruction online, and if necessary, teacher-led instruction using Lexia’s scripted lesson materials. This personalized approach simplifies differentiated instruction, enabling at-risk students to close the gap more quickly and helping on-level and advanced students to continue to progress with support from their teacher as needed.

As students work in the program, Lexia’s proprietary Assessment Without Testing® technology gathers norm-referenced performance data—without stopping the flow of instruction to administer a test—and adjusts each student’s learning path accordingly. Teachers and administrators receive real-time reports on individual student progress toward CCSS mastery, as well as reports indicating each student’s probability of meeting end-of-year, grade-level benchmarks. The system also generates individualized action plans recommending interventions and the proper intensity of instruction necessary to improve student performance and meet benchmarks.

Lexia’s research, upon which Lexia Reading Core5 is based, has been nationally recognized and proven effective in six peer-reviewed, research-based outcome studies published in scientific journals such as The Journal of Reading Research and the Bilingual Research Journal. These published reports serve as independent, third-party validation of Lexia’s efficacy research. Lexia is also a four-time winner of the District Administration magazine Reader’s Choice Top 100 Products Award.
