WASHINGTON LEARNING SOURCE PARTNERSHIP TO PROVIDE LEXIA READING TO SCHOOLS

3/15/2013 12:00:00 AM

Boston — March 13, 2013 — The Washington Learning Source has partnered with Lexia Learning®, developers of the award-winning technology-based reading program, Lexia Reading®.  Through the partnership agreement, Lexia Reading will be made available to schools in the nine regional Educational Service Districts.

As the only technology-based reading program proven to advance foundational reading skills development for students of all abilities in pre-K through grade 4, and accelerate reading development for at-risk students in grades 4–12, Lexia Reading has become an essential component of reading instruction across the country. The program provides personalized learning to students of all abilities, while educators receive norm-referenced measures that prioritize the students who are most at-risk, as well as resources for teacher-led, direct skill instruction to address specific skill gaps. As students work independently on Lexia Reading, they receive explicit, systematic, and structured learning on foundational reading skills. Each of the age-appropriate, skill-specific activities conforms to the Common Core standards. The fun, engaging program delivers scaffolded learning, advancing students to higher levels as they demonstrate proficiency.

“Making this program available to our members gives school administrators access to a high-quality approach that will help all students—from emerging and struggling readers to on-level and advanced students—develop their foundational reading skills,” said Anne Anderson, director, Washington Learning Source.  “For more than seven years, we have been providing a vast array of services to school districts for the purpose of assuring equal educational opportunities for quality education. We understand the importance of providing educational solutions that support different learning abilities and instructional models for students, and we are so pleased to offer our members this well-respected program.”

In addition to supporting foundational skills development, Lexia Reading also reduces schools’ dependence on traditional testing methods, while helping improve each student’s performance on grade-level assessments. Lexia Reading’s Assessment Without Testing® provides real-time data on students’ specific skill gaps, as well as norm-referenced predictions of each student’s percent chance of reaching the end-of-year benchmark. In the first month of use, educators can see which students are at the greatest risk of not reaching this milestone. Lexia’s assessment measures are correlated to, and are highly predictive of, outcomes on other commonly used assessments such as DIBELS®, AIMSweb® and MAP®. With this data, the program then automatically identifies and prioritizes students for small group or individual instruction and provides educators with a targeted action plan for each student, including instructional strategies and structured lesson materials to help each student improve performance on grade-level assessments.

“Today, many schools and districts struggle with limited time and resources to meet the diverse needs of students,” said Lexia CEO Nick Gaehde.  “It is during these challenging times, that schools and districts look to programs like Lexia Reading to drive student achievement in the most cost-effective manner possible.”
