ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display: Getting Started

I found getting started with the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display very straightforward. When I opened the box everything was very neatly packed with a welcome guide on top that has a QR code to scan for directions on setting up the device.

The ScreenBeam device is surprisingly very small for all it can do; it's no bigger than a wireless access point you would see hanging from the ceiling in your classroom. It came with a power cable as well as a three-foot HDMI cable and magnetic mount. The ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 has several ports in the back: one ethernet connection, two USB 2.0, and one USB 3.0, as well as 3.5 mm audio out so it can connect to an external audio source.

Once everything was unpacked, I followed the included QR code to the Quick Start guide. A full manual is also available for more advanced setup. I connected the ScreenBeam to power as well as the HDMI on my display, and my wifi network. For use with an interactive display and the included interactive whiteboard software, I would also connect a USB cable from the back of the device to my display.

The ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display gave me a variety of options to display a device. Users can connect directly from any Miracast, Airplay, or Google Cast device. I could also connect it to my local wifi or an existing LAN connection on my school's local network.

Once set, all I needed to do was select the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 receiver I was ready. Since the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 is device-agnostic you can connect with any Windows 10/11, Android v4.2, Mac V10.10, iOS v9.0, or Chrome OS 2014, or newer devices.

Accessories and apps can be added to the system to further extend its capabilities. For instance, wide-angle web cameras for video conferencing, Android apps, and a variety of mounting options add up to make a very versatile and powerful system.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Getting Started

I found getting started with the RP04 panel very easy. Once I plugged it in and started it up, I ran some software updates and then set up my account. The RP04 offers several options for logging in to the board. I also had options for using an NFC tag, which can be supplied with the board or created by your IT Department, a QR code, or password.

I really liked being able to customize my account with the features that I use the most without worrying about someone else making changes. A guest account and other sign-in options can be set to give a guest presenter or substitute teacher the access they need.

The panel hardware is very well put together. The screen has an anti-glare and antimicrobial coating, as well as a built-in air ionizer to maintain the air quality near the board. Options are available to attach a Chromebox or Windows computer to the display to boost your productivity.

I like the other optional accessories such as the InstaShow Wireless presentation system by which I can share my screen and also control my computer screen wirelessly through a push of a button via a USB dongle. Other optional accessories include different types of HD and 4K cameras for meeting spaces, some of which offer PTZ and wide viewing angles as well as active noise cancellation and omni-directional microphones so I can move around and still be seen and heard clearly.

The board natively works with Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox cloud storage solutions. Being a G Suite for Education user, the native Android operating system made the file access and sharing very streamlined. The built-in BenQ EZWrite software is very user-friendly, and includes the option to use an unlimited canvas so myself and students can share ideas all in one place. I was able to import, edit, and share a variety of documents and resources right on the canvas. I could also share a live camera feed with a document, or video conferencing camera (not included). I found the InstaShare 2 software a very easy and smooth sharing experience both from my device and to other student devices.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Best Features

The BenQ Board Pro RP04 has a very rich feature set that I found I could use day-to-day without thinking there were too many. A standout is the quality of the 4K picture and the clarity of the sound, as well as the noise-canceling and speech-enhanced microphone array that could pick up my voice when I was more than 20 feet away from the board. The board also has up to 50 touch points so there's no worry about having multiple users at the board at once.

It also offers the ability to cast multiple devices with the InstaShare 2 software, with up to nine splits on the board for different users to share. Integrating this with the EZWrite 6.0 software makes for a powerful collaboration solution.

I also like that they leverage the large screen to be used for digital signage and message broadcasting. This feature allows users with the right permission to send text and video messages on demand.

Any IT department will also like this board because it has a device management solution built into it as well as the TeamViewer Technical Support app for remote support. Users can also log in using their Windows Active Directory infrastructure BenQ's account management system, and identity and access management allows IT staff to centralize user accounts and provision these in one place with single sign-on capabilities.

Having the opportunity to use and test several different interactive panel solutions, I found the BenQ RP04 an excellent solution. This is a board that I can see teachers using as more than just an electronic writing surface as it makes it easy to share and collaborate on lessons both in person and at a distance.

The ability to share lessons and resources as well as record lessons to be replayed at a later time makes this tool an excellent resource for both teachers and students. The WizeFloor projector range was shown at BETT 2023 as a smart way to turn any floor into an interactive education space. 

Using ceiling-mounted projectors, or mobile units, WizeFloor is able to create a video on the floor that can be interactive. Step on it and the smart cameras will pick up what is being selected and the video can react. Consequently, the possibilities are huge! Think touchscreen, only on the floor and able to support multiple students at once.

The ViewSonic Universe was shown off at BETT 2023 as a new virtual space for holding class with students signing in from their own devices.

As hybrid learning becomes a more viable option and student absences continue to be an issue, ViewSonic has created a digital space that aims to get everyone together. That can include students signing in from devices at home while students in class use devices there, for a near seamless group experience.

Using interactive displays in the classroom is an opportunity to make the most of time with students and empower them with simple strategies. 

During a recent Tech & Learning webinar hosted by Dr. Kecia Ray, education experts discussed best practices, experiential learning tips, special processes, and technology insights needed to maximize display use and improve engagement.

“Remember we’re preparing our students for their future, not preparing them by our past,” said Micah Shippee, a middle school teacher for 22 years and now Director of Education Technology Consulting and Solutions for Samsung, adding that an interactive display really amplifies our teachers, which are still the best instruction resource in the classroom. “Good instruction is based on modeling. And so when we're using interactive panels, I think it's really powerful to use the same tools that students are using and to demonstrate for them how to use those tools in a more productive manner.”

Forward looking, figuratively. "Interactive displays let us get the learning away from the front of the room and into the hands of the students," said Matt Miller, author, former educator, and founder of Ditch That Textbook. "Moving the learning away from the front of the room benefits the students and learning improves."

"We cannot be locked to the front of the classroom, that sage on the stage," said Shippee, adding that innovation requires a culture shift. "Innovation could be becoming more of a guide on the side, and using these technologies to allow students to engage with the class instruction." To support that, district administrators need to look at full packages when considering interactive technology solutions, including professional development.

Amplification, not substitution. "Technology is not a silver bullet that will fix all problems," said Miller. "It's the way we use it to improve students' lives that creates engagement."

“Remember, tech is an amplifier of instruction, not a substitute,” said Shippee.

Along those lines, educators should also remember that professional development is a continuum, and that learning never ends. “It’s not too late!” said Gloria Marchus, an edtech consultant for Samsung. “If there’s a tool or platform you didn’t get training on learning to use during the pandemic, you can still go back and get training.”

Marchus also said that teachers learn similar to the way that students do, so when it comes to PD for technology, presenters should be engaging, create hands-on learning opportunities, and most importantly, be transparent. “Because not only are you rolling out, ‘Here's this idea here's this tool, here's the strategy,’ but they need to understand the why. It's much harder to say ‘Hey, you really need to incorporate this in your room,’ if they can't see the purpose behind it.”

Mistakes welcome. When it came to learning tech, Shippee said he often tried it right in front of his students so they could see him make mistakes as he learned. “I failed right in front of them,” he said. “And then I successfully leveraged that same technology right in front of them. It wasn't ‘This isn't working, put your heads down while I figure it out.’ It was watching an adult persevere, seeing some stick-to-itiveness that sometimes works out and sometimes doesn't. It allowed me to be vulnerable in front of my students and for us to be real with each other, and the relationship level just boosted through the roof. And technology was the catalyst for that.”

Such a process is closer to how students learn on their own outside of class in the real world and can be a model, said Miller. “For example, when a student gets a brand new video game, do they get out the instruction manual and read it front to back before they start playing it, to make sure that they know all of the things that they need? No, absolutely not! They jump in, and they start trying to figure it out, and you know they die on the first level, and then they die again, and then they finally figure it out, and they can get to the next level.”

The learning experience that we design for students needs to have an appropriate level of challenge to it, said Shippee. And then we have to provide the proper tools, such as interactive displays, for students to collaborate and solve these challenges.

Advice for the year ahead. Each of the presenters was asked by Ray for one piece of advice to educators as they begin the new school year.

“You are probably doing better than you think,” said Marchus, in regard to using new technology and teaching in general. “I've had a lot of experiences when you end a lesson, a day, or a conversation, and you’re kicking yourself, and then the next day someone will come up, and they'll say ‘Thanks.’”

“Change is upon us, so we have to embrace it,” said Shippee. “Letting our students see us try something new and fail is useful.”

Finally, Miller suggested that educators remember to take care of themselves. “Teaching is hard work,” he said. “So many teachers are burned out or leaving the profession, and by golly, we need you!”

Hall Research has a new addition to their Javelin series active optical cables: the CUSB3V1-AP*.  Available in lengths of 15, 30, and 50 meters, CUSBV1-AP* cables support transparent extension of USB 3.1 Gen1 Super-Speed at data rates of up to 5 Gbps. It is also downward compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1 devices. An additional 5 volt regulator on the receiver end will boost the power to compensate for power hungry USB cameras.

Based on this information, it adapts and skews the 3D image for the best viewing angle. Showcased in a 15-inch, glasses-free desktop volumetric monitor, this 4K display features super high precision and contrast for the best spatial reality experience not found in conventional naked-eye 3D displays. 

The display technology is designed for connection to a gaming computer via HDMI cable and runs Sony's SDKs using a game engine, such as Unity and UE4. While there’re still a lot of wide-XGA screens and projectors in use at schools, the move to HD resolutions and beyond is taking hold. It may not be the brightest screen or one that can show 4K images, but Viewsonic’s VA2246m is one of the best values in displays today. The 21.5-inch screen costs $90, yet shows full HD imaging, has a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and an antiglare coating that should lessen stray reflections. It has a pair of speakers as well as connections for VGA and DVI computers but not an HDMI port. If you don’t want to use the tilting stand, it has 100-millimeter VESA mounting holes. The big bonus is that it includes something other inexpensive displays don’t: a three-year warranty.

Sometimes huddling around the teacher’s notebook can be a little too close for a small group of students, while using the classroom projector might be too much. Using an external display facing the children while the teacher can see her display and the kids at once is often a strategy that’s just right. 

At 2-pounds, about the size of a laptop computer and only 0.4-inches thick, HP’s $220 EliteDisplay S14 screen provides a quick and easy way to add a 14-inch external display. A must-have accessory, the S14 is an HD display with a wide 178-degree viewing angle; figure that five or six can sit around it. 

The included cover protects the display’s glass surface from damage when it’s not being used. It doubles as a fold-open stand that holds the screen at a 35-degree tilt. While sturdy, it can’t be adjusted to a different angle or set up vertically. The display lacks VESA hardware for a generic stand or wall mount. 

One of the easiest displays to use, forget about fumbling with HDMI or VGA cables, power adapters and crossing your fingers that it works. Just open the cover, plug the included USB-C cable into a notebook, desktop, phone or tablet and turn the display on. Unfortunately, the design precludes using a traditional HDMI or VGA cable to stream images to the S14. 

HIGH-IMPACT, LOW-POWER

Its output was a little dimmer than the notebooks I used the S14 with, but it was plenty bright enough for use in a well-lit room. To try it out, I started by using an HP EliteBook Dragonfly notebook and then used it with an Apple Macbook Air, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 and an Acer Chromebook Tab 10. All four systems worked like a hand in a glove with the external monitor with no noticeable delay. 

It worked just as well going over geometric shapes and a timeline of history as with student photographs and online art. On the downside, the S14 refused to work with any of three USB C hubs I have, or my Lightning-plug based iPad Pro. 

The display has an on/off button and fired up immediately. It showed a summary of the connection specs followed by either extending the host system’s desktop or mirroring it. 

Hidden underneath are four keys for using HP’s Display Assistant software to adjust the screen’s output. It takes a little getting used to, but I was able to change the screen’s brightness, contrast and choose among nine color modes plus a custom setting with your own color balance. For me, the HP Enhance + setting worked best, with excellent brightness and color balance that closely matched the output of my Macbook Air. The good news is that the screen used 5 watts of power, so it will only slightly reduce the battery life of the host notebook. 

I used the S14 to extend the notebook’s desktop to create a second screen alongside the host notebook. This allowed me to go over curriculum on one screen while working through my email or Web research on the other. It really comes into its own in mirroring mode. Here, the S14 display can be turned toward a small group of students or parents so that all can see the same images. In both cases, the teacher and her audience can maintain eye contact while both are looking at the same material. 

Regardless of whether it’s used to extend a desktop or mirror a notebook’s main screen, the $220 HP EliteDisplay S14 is not only one of the easiest portable monitors to use but it’s one of the best and least expensive.

Shelby County Schools (SCS) in Tennessee have chosen Boxlight Corporation’s (Nasdaq: BOXL) (“Boxlight”) ProColor flat panel displays for use in its classrooms. The district has also selected Central Technologies as its approved provider of Boxlight’s interactive flat panel displays. This contract is expected to generate $1MM in revenue for Boxlight. 

Shelby County Schools is Tennessee’s largest public school district and is among the 25 largest public school districts in the United States. Formerly comprised of two smaller districts, Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools, the district now serves over 100,000 students in more than 200 schools.

The ProColor interactive flat panel displays combine touch technology and collaboration in high-definition and ultra high-definition LED flat panel Android displays. The ProColor displays allow up to 20 simultaneous single-point touch users, and offer a higher-contrast display that makes it possible to see the panel clearly from anywhere in the classroom. 

When it comes to interactive displays, Dell has been thinking big – really big. The C8621QT 86 4K Interactive Touch Monitor goes beyond most big classroom displays with a spacious 85.6-inch diagonal screen that shows 4K resolution and can respond to up to 20 inputs. It uses passive pens and has a slot for an integrated PC but the display’s bonus for education is its Screen Drop feature that slides its image down. This way, the C8621QT 86 can accommodate short students or those in wheelchairs by rolling the screen down to their level. The display is expected in early April for around $10,000.

Lafayette School Corporation in Indiana, a 1:1 tablet computer district, is dedicated to educating its students through a thoughtful approach to learning and investing in technology. Lafayette recently determined its aging touch boards and displays were no longer reliable in every classroom. 

“Ten years is a really long time in technology years and our failing classroom audio/video systems were starting to be really expensive to service and maintain. We wanted to upgrade the experience with a solution that would truly work for our students and staff and make an impact,” said Li Zhao, Chief Technology Officer at Lafayette School Corporation. 

Over a two-year period of looking at interactive displays, Zhao tested six different makes and models. The objective was to find a solution that not only had to meet the demand for whiteboard technology, but also provide high-quality imaging for the school’s robust IPTV and digital signage network. 

The district selected BenQ’s RP Series interactive flat panels (IFP) after testing more than 40 65-inch IFPs installed across eight schools.

The RP Series of IFPs offers features intended to encourage engagement inside and outside of the classroom. Using cloud-based collaboration combined with BenQ’s EZwrite 5.0 platform, the IFP allows teachers and students to share ideas, notes, opinions, and make annotations on screen captures from any app, video, website, document, or image. Regardless of location, all participants can also make annotations on the screen from their personal devices. Teachers can download and upload files to cloud services such as One Drive or Dropbox directly from their screens. For Lafayette, enabling simple integrations allowed for HDMI inputs to the teacher’s laptop, Apple TV, a Wi-Fi wireless presentation dongle, and a DVD player. 

“All the ports are right there on the front, which was one of our requirements,” said Zhao. “When they’re on the side of up front, it grants quick access. If they’re in back, it’s really awkward trying to plug them in or troubleshoot any issues. It’s a simple design element that in our testing really stood out.” 

The IFPs also come with dual pens permitting two users to write or draw simultaneously with different color at the same time. Within Brush Mode, participants can use a physical paintbrush while the handwriting recognition feature converts written text, numbers, forms, and drawings into legible digital text without having to switch modes. 

Other features include:

• Anti-glare, bacteria-resistant screen
• CO2 air-quality sensor monitors the CO2 concentration level in classrooms
• Smart Eye-Care technology, which is certified to remove the blue light and flicker. 
• Voice Assistant allows teachers to start a timer or search the internet anywhere in the classroom

For Lafayette, BenQ IFPs have become the standard. More than 125 units were installed in all eight of their elementary schools, including the district’s new elementary school where BenQ’s 75-inch 4K IFP was integrated into each of the school’s 36 classrooms. The RP Series IFP were also installed in three high school special education classrooms. Each building also has access to a BenQ IFP installed on a mobile cart to provide the collaboration tools in other areas or to operate as a backup.  As the Lafayette district continues to grow, the technology department is examining other areas where the BenQ technology could be useful. Most recently, the school opened up a new career center and plans are underway to install the panels into the support space.

In combination with Vision Exchange, the new Miris Netcapture enables interactive lectures and lecture capture all at once. Miris Netcapture records the streamed content from Vision Exchange and transfers it to UbiCast’s Miris Video Platform for editing, managing and distributing through a video player dedicated to social learning. This network-based content capture solution removes the need for each room or lecture hall to be equipped with its own recording device. Instead, Miris Netcapture is permanently located in the server room and dynamically captures the required classroom with Vision Exchange equipped.

AI-based Edge Analytics Appliance: Sony’s first AI-based video analytics solution, the REA-C1000, allows users to create video content in real time without the need for specialized training, additional staff or equipment.

The compact and lightweight REA-C1000 uses AI-based video analytics technology to analyze the input it receives from connected cameras and automatically extract the object in focus to combine it with other images in real time. The technology uses motion/face detection and color/shape recognition.

Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) in Del Valle, Texas, had its eye on the future when it opened the Newton Collins Elementary School. In addition to displays for the new building, the district was exploring displays for a new high school career and tech ed (CTE) building, as well as alternatives to the projectors that were reaching end of life in classrooms throughout the district. 

The district installed a 70-inch RP704K in a fourth-grade math classroom for a six-month trial. The panel provided Germ-Resistant Screens, Low Blue Light, Flicker-Free, and Anti-Glare technologies.

Since Newton Collins Elementary School opened, Del Valle has installed additional IFPs within some renovated classrooms at the high school and the high school’s new career technology innovation wing as well as three offices within the district’s administrative building. With a range of connectivity options, many devices can be connected to the IFPs including a Lumens’ Ladibug document camera in addition to each classroom’s Chromebook. The BenQ IFPs within the new elementary school were installed on IFP carts with an electronic lift to allow every student access to the display and encourage collaboration. 

The new school year has started and resolutions are top of mind. Sure, this could mean kids pledging to tackle their homework before the quarterback or spending a fortnight on the science fair instead of a fair part of after school hours on Fortnite. But the real resolution on teacher and admin’s mind has more to do with pixels and OLED panels.

In the world of displays, Full HD once boasted the sharpest picture a teacher could hope for. But new players have upped the game to 4K Ultra HD levels. Crisp images with endless detail reinvigorate lesson plans to engage little minds. Four times the pixels, with a total res of 3840x2160, equals visual clarity and a wow-factor— particularly for work stations where kids sit close to the screen. Even from 12-20 inches, individual densely packed pixels melt together for a seamless image. 

Classrooms upgrading to 4K from 1080p Full HD will only feel a serious impact when viewing material made for those 8 million pixels. To truly take advantage of the display’s visuals; access 4K/Ultra HD content on Amazon, Netflix, YouTube’s HDR Channel and nature travel programs such as those by Jacob + Katie Schwarz — or by building an educational 4K Blue-ray Library. For larger displays, 4K is assumed to become the new standard so investing now rather than opting for soon-to-be-outdated makes sense for the long term budget.

Photography students will love finally being able to access all of the information their trusty digital lenses are capturing. Students with special needs or little ones who struggle with focus and attention issues will love the immersive nature of close image fields sans pesky grids and the distraction of visible pixels. But while “4K” sounds exciting and unbeatable — other factors beyond resolution can impact the projector's overall picture quality. Aspects like higher quality optics/lenses, higher light output and contrast ratios go, longer lamp life, lower noise and better color should also be considered when picking the perfect projector. 

“Ultra HD is the next natural step forward in display technologies, offering consumers an incredibly immersive viewing experience with outstanding new levels of picture quality,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. The consumer electronics industry’s designation for Ultra HD products also defined the core characteristics of Ultra High-Definition TVs, monitors and projectors for the home. Minimum performance attributes include display resolution of at least eight million active pixels, with at least 3,840 horizontally and at least 2,160 vertically. Displays will have an aspect ratio with width to height of at least 16 X 9. To use the Ultra HD label, display products will require at least one digital input capable of carrying and presenting native 4K format video from this input at full 3,840 X 2,160 resolution.

BenQ will feature its display solutions for education at the 2019 Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) Convention and Exposition, Feb. 4-8 at the Henry B. RP Series IFPs 

The 4K UHD IFP lineup includes the 65" RP6501K, 75" RP7501K and 86" RP8601K to fit any big or small classroom. Blue Core laser projectors
The interactive ultra-short-throw WXGA (1280 x 800) LW890UST, full HD LH890UST (1920 x 1080) and the short-throw WXGA (1280 x 800) LW820ST are the first interactive K-12 laser projectors from the new Blue Core family that can be configured for either pen or touch interactivity. The short-throw WUXGA LU951ST, WUXGA LU950, full HD LH720, WXGA LW720 and XGA LX720 deliver up to 5,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and high contrast without lamps, filters or color decay. All projectors have been designed with BenQ's DustGuard technology, including sealed laser modules to protect the laser bank.  BenQ's LK953ST and LK952 laser projectors are the latest addition to the Blue Core family. NEC Display Solutions of America, Inc., provider of commercial projectors and displays, today announced the launch of two new projector series. The MC and ME series consolidate NEC’s former entry-level projector series. Designed primarily for K-12 education, house of worship classrooms and small business applications, the five new models provide between 3700 and 4000 lumens and offer XGA, WXGA or WUXGA resolution.

The new MC series projectors — MC372X and MC382W — replace the models in NEC’s VE and V series. These models offer an upgrade for entry-level projector customers, including increased brightness, better connectivity, network capability and longer lamp life. The three new ME series projectors — ME402X, ME372W and ME382U —replace models in NEC’s first-generation ME series, offering longer lamp life and a broad choice of resolutions.

Each new MC and ME model features LCD technology and a new high-performance lamp, lasting up to 15,000 hours in Eco mode or 10,000 hours at full brightness.

Each MC and ME model includes a standard zoom lens, while MC series projectors have a 1.2X zoom lens, and ME series projectors have a broad 1.7X zoom lens for  greater installation flexibility.

Vivitek will showcase its BYOD solutions with the NovoConnect range.

The NovoTouch wireless collaborative flat panel solution offers an all-in-one option for the classroom and students. The NovoTouch multi-touch platform is Android-based and can accommodate wireless connectivity from mobile devices or laptops with Windows, MacOS, iOS or Android operating systems.

Vivitek’s NovoCast - a standalone wireless BYOD collaboration system that can be combined with any existing screen or projector allows a split screen display from four devices. All NovoConnect solutions feature digital annotation and voting-polling capabilities as well as teacher preview.

Vivitek’s NovoDS Solution is a  signage tool which, with the NovoDS Cloud service, can publish real-time info to display screens anywhere on the campus. Also on display will be the DH4661Z Full HD laser solid-state illuminated projector, which has been developed for large screen projection in smaller spaces. 

Dedicated to making ‘every day career day’, the leadership at the Charter School for Applied Technologies (CSAT) in Buffalo, NY have announced plans to install Boxlight Corporation’s  ProColor 752 interactive flat panel displays in every classroom across three buildings for its 2,365 students.

Installations have begun in the elementary building and high school math classes, with the addition of 60 75” flat panel displays for all classroom including art, music and technology rooms.  Each display panel includes MimioStudio for lesson creation and delivery.  Next fall, the middle school building will be equipped with the state-of-the-art, ultra-high definition LCD displays. The displays’ Touch 360° interactivity also features up to 20 single-touch points or 10 dual-touch for gestures so users can work simultaneously.

CSAT’s Bob Shannon and Alie Kuitems, chief technology officer and technology integration specialist, respectively, began their search for new technology that would provide greater collaboration – an important 21st century workplace skill that stems from CSAT’s commitment to extensive career preparation for all students – beginning in kindergarten.

“We also didn’t want to burden our teachers with something that wasn’t intuitive to use, added Kuitems.  “It had to just hang on the wall, plug-and-play, and start on day one – and that’s what we have with Boxlight’s ProColor technology. Additionally, Shannon and Kuitems noted that the ease with which the MimioStudio™ classroom software opens third party content created in programs such as PDF, IWB and PowerPoint – all without the need of a time-consuming conversion process. 

“In the end," Kuitems concluded, “while the features of the display boards captured our attention, it’s what we see in the classrooms that has us excited about our selection of Boxlight technology. “Students are more engaged, even volunteering more to go to the board and show their work and we believe that will result in improved learning outcomes for our students, now and into the future.”

Technology transforms the way students learn and how educators teach. That is why Portsmouth Public Schools embraces new technology, such as BenQ’s interactive flat panels, as a means to strengthen instruction and student achievement. With the school’s inventory of interactive projectors reaching the end of their life, it was time to find a new option that would accomplish that mission. The new technology couldn’t just be another projector; the district wanted a solution that would provide students and faculty with the next generation of interactivity.

The district relied on aging, traditional lamp-based projectors as a dedicated whiteboard and interactive surface to boost learning opportunities across all schools and a variety of subjects. However, they required expensive maintenance including costly lamp replacements that took the system out of commission. Additionally, these projectors tend to lose brightness over time, making it difficult for students to see content clearly. Furthermore, the units had to be calibrated, which required more upkeep and increased potential for more system down time. The lengthy boot up and shut down time was another challenge for teachers. They had to plan ahead and keep the class busy and on task while waiting for their projector to warm up before proceeding. Once on, the internal projector fans used to keep the lamps cool were noisy and distracting. Finally, the interactive pens that were necessary to interact with the screen were glitchy, expensive to replace, and limited to one user at a time.

“Having the right technology in place helps to improve teaching and learning, said Dean Schlaepfer, Director of Information Technology for Portsmouth Public Schools. “We ask teachers to incorporate more technology in their instruction to support student achievement. Therefore, it’s my goal to find relevant and practical products that will support this mission.”

With interactive flat panels (IFPs) coming down in price and feature sets becoming more robust, the school district started their research into the latest solutions on the market. Jennifer Thomas, the district’s supervisor of instructional technology, and Schlaepfer attended a nearby technology expo to see products up close. For the better part of the next year, Portsmouth continued their in-depth research process, visiting neighboring districts to get a demonstration of their IFPs and then choosing what solutions to test out.

A core group of teachers helped Thomas and Schlaepfer get the pulse of what was happening in the classroom and identify all the ways they wanted to use the screens.

“We wanted to find a product that could satisfy a variety of teaching styles and learning needs. For example, we have large and small classrooms as well as those with special lighting needs. We also wanted interactive screens that would accommodate various uses by subject area, thereby providing teachers flexibility with how they use the panels,” said Thomas.

BenQ Education RP Series IFPs stood out from the pack. The RP704 70-inch display features 4K UHD resolution that makes every lesson pop off the wall without dimming lights and risking students’ attention, along with 20-point multi-touch capabilities and innovative technologies that provide a healthier viewing experience for teachers and students. “BenQ had the whole package and a price point that fit our budget,” said Schlaepfer.

Working with Troxell, the nation’s leading end-to-end solution provider for education technology, the district installed 675 BenQ IFPs, satisfying all the different use cases and eliminating the expense of lamp replacements. Troxell integrated a Lenovo Tiny onto the back of each screen, providing teachers with a seamless and rich interactive experience that opened additional learning opportunities. Each screen was mounted onto a Peerless cart. For the elementary classrooms and some of the middle school and high school classrooms, the IFPs were mounted onto a cart with a mechanical lift to allow teachers to raise and lower the screen and grant better access to students of all heights.

“In the past, students with special visual needs had to take state-required tests on a large, printed booklet and then wait to get their results back,” said Thomas. “With BenQ panels, everything is large enough for them to see and they can even zoom in as needed. As educators, we frequently drive home the importance of caring not only for our needs of today, but the needs of the future. This is particularly true when it comes to the environment. While the political climate around the topic might seem unstable, administrators and those in purchasing positions can do their homework and earn an A in protecting students and their future by going green.

Although it can be tricky to determine how truly green your choices are, a quick scan of awards can offer a handful of options that will meet not only your school’s needs, but the earths. For a broader list of options, many look to nonprofit TCO Certified for a list of tech that not only stays true to environmental issues, but social issues as well. TCO Certification is available for eight product categories: displays, notebooks, tablets, smartphones, desktops, all-in-one PCs, projectors and headsets. Products must meet criteria for energy efficiency, ergonomic design and limited hazardous substance content. This organization looks at more than a surface assessment of how eco-friendly a project is upon purchase, but at the tech’s environmental sustainability throughout the IT product life cycle. Projector and display models from companies like Casio, Epson, BenQ and ViewSonic made the list.

Hybrid Helpers

Hybrids might have taken auto options to the next level in environmental impact awareness, now the concept is driving a new style of projection. Casio's line of LampFree projectors provide eco-friendly data projection by combining a hybrid laser and LED light source to create a high-brightness, mercury-free tool. The developments allow the hybrid projector to use up to half the amount of power per unit than other lamp-based projectors. Although the use of mercury is widely prohibited worldwide today, this hazardous substance continues to be employed as a light source for conventional projector lamps — creating an issue when the used lamps needs to be discarded.

Another element to keep in mind, both financially when it comes to Total Cost of Ownership and environmentally when outdated or inefficient tech has to be replaced and lamps safely disposed of, is the LampFree projectors' long operating life of up to 20,000 hours. Spectrum Industries Inc. introduces its newest active learning solution, the TechCenter.

The TechCenter is available as either a single (27.75” wide) or double (51” wide) unit. There are a number of different display options, including optional dry erase boards and the ability to hold up to two 70” monitors. This new product features a removable rear locking panel that provides access to an optional 12 RU rack cube that can hold all AV or IT equipment.

A Yen for Tech

Information and Communication Tech is being promoted in schools throughout Japan in accordance with the Japanese government's Basic Plan for the Promotion of Education, but costs have slowed the process. Fukuroi Asaba Higashi Elementary School installed Casio Ultra Short Throw lamp-free projectors and interactive whiteboards in all 210 regular classrooms in its 12 public elementary schools, a choice made after measuring long term savings due to extended light source life and reduced installation costs.

First-grade teacher Takuya Sato says he has seen both the children's understanding and motivation improve since he began using projectors in his lessons. “In our history classes, we search the Internet for materials and show them in video format, because visual images have higher impact than words written in a textbook. In physical education classes, too, we can communicate proper body movements visually.”

This also helps me as a teacher by freeing me to circulate among the desks and monitor the children's efforts to imitate the stroke order they are viewing on the screen.”

However, escaping from a classroom filled with Promethean ActivPanel tech is the last thing students at Whalley Church of England Primary school in Lancashire would choose. At Hesketh with Becconsall All Saints CE Primary School in the village of Hesketh Bank, tech-loving students in a Year 4 class were frustrated by the struggle to see lessons on their fading, glitchy whiteboard. With teacher Rory Dixon, they created a black and white movie to demonstrate how outdated their AV situation was and won a grant for an ActivPanel. They use the connectivity of the panel to mirror and interact with all class devices for whole class polling, both for lesson responses and to offer instant lesson feedback.

The Colorful World of OZ

Sunny Australia often means a struggle against ambient light for clear viewing in a classroom, as well as accurate color representation. The projector is such a vital piece of hardware that it’s difficult to imagine a classroom without one. And in recent years, projector technology has significantly improved with lamp-free models that extend product life and require minimal, if any, maintenance. At the same time, flat panel TVs have become more available as a choice for school projection needs.

Although cost is certainly an important decision factor, other critical factors include:

· Creating a learning culture of collaboration and innovation

· Degree of interactivity of flat panels and projectors

· Defining the acceptable viewing range

· Impact on student learning

· Total cost of ownership (TCO)

There may be some situations where a flat panel makes sense, such as working with small groups of students in learning stations. However, flat panel displays have a fixed size that can be a serious issue in larger classrooms when viewing text and numbers on spreadsheets. In larger classrooms, it would be difficult for students in the back of the class to view the screen in sufficient detail to accomplish the lesson goals.

After the aggravation and costs of replacing lamps and filters on older projectors, many schools and districts may consider flat panels, but the new solid state (Laser and LED) projectors are still more cost-effective when compared to flat panels. Both the newer projectors and flat panels have minimal maintenance costs, but flat panels have a higher TCO due to the initial purchase price.

When thinking about the kinds of interactive, collaborative environment schools want to establish with their projection requirements, the flat panel has limitations. It is two-dimensional whereas one or more projectors can be used to create a 3-D environment, which can illustrate concepts such as the solar system or the inner workings of the heart in a way that immerses students into the lesson not possible before.

Another benefit to using laser or LED projectors is that it is “green” technology and decreases a school or district’s carbon footprint. The projectors use 30% less electricity than older projectors, eliminate mercury, and reduce Coemissions with lower power needs. With an estimated 20,000 hours of operation, projectors may have a longer life span than flat panels and eliminate additional lamp and filter costs.

While schools might opt for an occasional flat panel, most schools will find laser or LED projectors a better option when considering flexibility of use and TCO. Although both new projectors and flat panels have minimal ongoing maintenance costs—the projectors’ initial cost is far less than that of flat panels making them a better financial choice, with the added benefit of promoting sustainable, green technology.

A FRESH START

With a mix of whiteboards and projectors distributed unevenly throughout its five schools, Peters Township (PA) School District knew it needed to update and establish equitable learning opportunities for all students. Adam Swinchock, director of instructional technology, notes that the scattered technology “didn’t support collaborative learning … We needed a solution that would move away from passive learning and make the students more engaged.”

Students use the Sharp AQUOS BOARD being used in math class. The district decided on a solution that included upgrading its Internet connectivity and placing 70-inch Sharp AQUOS BOARD interactive displays in each classroom, in addition to rear-mounted DVD players, soundboards, and wireless keyboards. The displays are mounted on rolling mobile carts so they can be moved around the classroom and even between classrooms. The initial installation took place in 46 classrooms for grades 4–6 in August 2015.

INNOVATIVE RESULTS

Swinchock notes that the installation was “fast and easy” and “the reception from teachers was very positive.” Teachers can connect to, and control, the AQUOS BOARD displays via their preferred devices, and students can connect via multiple input ports. Up to four students, for example, can connect and work together on teacher-created math activities. The displays also support the district’s math program, including tools and games that can be used in small groups or as whole-class activities. Teachers are now able to explore cooperative learning scenarios with other classrooms as well.

In addition, the students benefit from more creative and real-world learning applications. Rather than simply looking at textbooks and whiteboards, students now have endless possibilities, such as viewing a live space shuttle launch or interacting with field experts via video conferencing.

Swinchock says that improved connectivity, combined with the flexible interactive displays, “has created a universally collaborative learning environment that we are very happy with” and the district plans to roll out the solution to its remaining classrooms.

PHASING OUT “OLD SCHOOL”

Tampa Prep, a high-achieving, independent school in Tampa (FL), serving 650 students in grades 6–12, completely rebuilt 12 middle-school classrooms and collaborative areas last year. These new spaces are bright, open, and flexible. And with two Epson BrightLink 595Wi interactive projectors per classroom, 1:1 iPads, wireless microphones, dry-erase wall coverings, and colorful ergonomic desks with the mobility of bumper cars, they’re thoroughly interactive spaces for 21st-century learning.

With two projectors, the classrooms no longer have a front or back. “Our students can’t hide from learning in the back of the room anymore, and with these new collaborative learning tools, they don’t want to,” says Chad Lewis, director of technology. “Our flexible environment, combined with innovative technologies, gets our students out of their seats and learning in new, creative ways.”

MORE COLLABORATION OPPORTUNITIES

Students and teachers enjoy the Epson iProjection app and Epson Multi-PC Projection with built-in Moderator device management software. No longer tethered to the front of the room, Tampa Prep’s teachers can transmit their iPads’ displays to the projectors from anywhere in the room. They can also share and compare student work from multiple devices using the Epson iProjectionTM app and Epson Multi-PC Projection with built-in Moderator device management software, which allows up to 50 computers, tablets, and other devices to be connected via the network for ultimate classroom collaboration.

With the BrightLink’s touch-based interactivity, up to six students can touch, draw, select, and interact with projected content using intuitive gestures and their fingers as writing tools. Even in their renovated, bright classrooms with the Florida sunshine streaming in, students have no problem viewing the projected images, which use 3LCD, 3-chip technology for brilliant, true-to-life color. Lewis is pleased with the projectors’ reliability and their long-life, low-cost lamps. Teacher Laura Bridges-Pereira says that the projectors “have an amazing image throw, which allows equitable access for all students to the same amount of information from anywhere ... each student in my classroom has a front-row seat to participation and learning.”

“Classrooms need to reflect our changing world, where teachers and textbooks are no longer the sole source of learning,” says Lewis. These students “now have the technology tools for more interaction with multimedia and each other, stirring up their critical thinking skills with equal access to information.”

HELP FOR TECH-SAVVY KIDS STRUGGLING IN TRADITIONAL CLASSROOMS

How can teachers in traditional classrooms engage students who have grown up using touchscreens, tablets, and smartphones and are used to interactive content? Kelli Joy, fifth-grade teacher in Portland (OR) Public Schools, acknowledged this challenge but didn’t want to lose valuable class time learning new technology and incorporating it into lessons.

Lana Penley, the principal of Marysville School where Joy teaches, realized the school needed new technology in the classrooms. “Schooling has to be connected to the real world, and I think that’s the advantage technology can give kids,” she says. “They’re more engaged because it’s more like their real world.”

A TRANSFORMING TOOL

Teachers at the use the Marysville School use the InFocus JTouch interactive whiteboard. An InFocus JTouch interactive whiteboard allows Joy to incorporate Web content and digital materials into her lessons and allows her students to collaborate and participate in presentations, activities, and even teaching. Students can share their work directly from their laptops with wireless casting technology.

The JTouch features a 1080p touchscreen display, integrated speakers, and wireless collaboration technology for screen sharing. Joy appreciates the ability to save work and says she often goes back to reference something the students worked on previously. In addition to greater student engagement, she’s also noted increased information retention.

“One of the things I’ve appreciated about the JTouch is the flexibility of the tool. I can have students working on our laptops and they’ll be able to share what they’re working on,” she says. “It all works so seamlessly. We’re moving and sharing things at a faster pace than we have before. I think it’s made me a better teacher.”

A GIANT PHONE-SHAPED COLLABORATION TOOL

Using SMART kapp, everything written on the board can be saved and shared. Nicholas Provenzano, high-school English teacher in the Grosse Point (MI) Public School System, loves any tool that improves collaboration for students and teachers. And SMART kapp, an innovative take on the interactive whiteboard, fits the bill. Users take notes using regular dry-erase markers, but everything written on the board can be saved and shared. And others—in the room or at a remote location—can follow along in the app as people write on the board. SMART kapp is easy to set up and use and ideal for sharing information and ideas on multiple devices.

For example, Provenzano writes instructions for his students on the board, scans the QR code, and sends it to his phone. Everything he writes or erases appears on his phone, and it works smoothly with a Bluetooth connection. The SMART kapp comes in 42” and 84” versions. Both can be wall-mounted and are compatible with iOS and Android devices.

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

SMART kapp also works with Evernote so users can text, mail, or send their work to Evernote. Provenzano says, “Since I have shared notebooks with my students, I can send any of these notes to all of my students by simply sending [them] to the shared notebook. Better yet, when students are working on different projects, they could use the board, scan the QR code, and start sharing their work in their own Evernote notebooks.”

Provenzano plans to include the SMART kapp in his school’s new makerspace. He says it’s “perfect for the type of work students have asked to do in our space. It is a very cool device that will only grow to have more bells and whistles.”

UNIVERSITY REC CENTER

When a Midwestern U.S. university needed a competitive edge to attract new students, it upgraded its rec center with a massive Sharp professional display video wall. Students now view movies, college football and other programming in the hi-tech signature space while exercising or socializing.

Making an Impact

Today’s high school students face a myriad of options when choosing a university to continue their education. In order to attract and retain top-line students, higher education institutions are often challenged to implement unique measures. Signature spaces, like 24/7 dining rooms, lazy rivers and beach clubs have sprouted at college campuses across the country as many schools are applying unprecedented techniques to gain interest from a new generation of students. Schools are competing with one another to keep up with new technologies and trends in education while also focusing on maintaining a reputation with current and future student bodies.

For example, a U.S. university in the Midwest recently made a move to stand out from the competition by aiming to build one of the nation’s top college gymnasiums for its students. Pulling from data that highlighted the immense amount of time students spend at the gym, as well as the diversity of the facility’s audience, the university felt that improving this area was an ideal way to heighten the student experience.

The Bigger the Better

The plan to renovate the student rec center on campus was, in part, due to the need for updated technology. The university contracted a reputable architectural firm to help design and create the space. The development strategy included which products to install and how to integrate the technology into the environment in an effective and seamless manner.

To serve as the main attraction to the gym, the team added a gigantic, 240” diagonal video wall from Sharp that towered above the gymnasium space. The architectural firm, along with an audiovisual design engineer, configured a video wall using 16 Sharp PN-V601 60-inch class (60” diagonal) professional monitors in a 4x4 configuration. The engineers were challenged to elevate the monitors so it would be visible from every corner of the floor, as well as from both the upper and lower levels of the facility. The bottom of the display wall hangs more than 20 feet above the floor, making it an impressive system that can be seen from many angles.

Building the Campus of the Future

Since the ambitious installation was completed, students at the university now enjoy watching the massive wall display while they are exercising on the elliptical machine or hanging out in the student lounge. The video wall display can be seen from the smoothie bar to the basketball courts, and usually airs movies, sports programming, the university’s general messaging and a view of the quad, except on Saturdays when the school’s football game is shown on the 240” diagonal display made up of 16 linked monitors.

The video wall includes cable tuners, a disc player and local PC/laptop hook-ups. The architects and engineers chose the Sharp monitors for their ability to support the HD PC and disc platforms, as well as for brand reputation and innovative approach to technology. In order to build the campus of the future—one that would attract new students and keep the current student body buzzing—the university went with a trusted leader in the industry and the results are prominently displayed in an amazing HD monitor wall. The tool activates your computer’s microphone and detects the noise level in the classroom. If the class is too noisy, you will see that the balls will be flying and jumping in the screen, if the noise is fine in the classroom, the balls will not go that wild and they will remain still. This is just a new way for classroom management.

This tool can be used as the students are working in groups or doing pair work or anytime you like.
