Getting started was as simple as plug and play as my devices recognized both immediately.

My first impressions from a build standpoint were very positive. The design is well-thought out with a braided 5-foot cord, sturdy moulded end connections, and an integrated velcro strap that stays on the cable while in use. The soft-on-ear design and headband padding was very comfortable and easy to clean.

I found these to have ample adjustability almost fitting my adult-sized head. Furthermore, the short KidCom microphone stands off the unit less than an inch, and will definitely make for easy cleaning as well as cut down on breakage and distraction.

AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headset: Best Features

Excellent audio quality, compatible with PC/MAC, Chromebooks, tablets, and more.

Volume limitation designed into the product to limit volume setting to 85 dB.

The KidCom microphone is designed for durability and ease of cleaning.

Comfort and adjustability designed for young learners.

Long braided cables with reinforced connections.

3.5 mm and USB-C connection options.

AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headset: Pricing

The MSRP for the 3.5mm TRRS is $24.95, while the USB-C model is $29.95. Both are available in green or orange.

AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headset: Key Takeaways

I tested the AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headsets in various scenarios and found both the 3.5 mm and USB-C models connected immediately to both Chromebook and PC devices. I listened to music, spoken work, and video, and had a pleasurable listening experience that delivered clear sound that captured the entire sound experience.

The recording properties of each were a little different in my experience, with the 3.5 mm connection delivering a little better overall voice recording quality than USB-C. Not to say the USB-C input was poor, just the 3.5 mm connection had a little better clarity. Of course, there are many factors that contribute to this difference, such as device hardware, drivers, etc. Educators and students would be happy with either of the units for recording student audio.

Overall, the AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headsets are well-designed and -built units that deliver great audio in a small form factor at a great price. These headsets come in two fun colors and have durable, easy-to-clean surfaces and components. I would recommend the AVID WonderEars AP-400 Headset to any elementary school educator.

Educator Edtech Reviews

The Panasonic PT-CMZ50 is an ultra-short throw laser projector, targeted to higher education settings but also has its place in the K-12 environment, especially large audience settings. The projector’s high-quality bright images, along with virtually no shadowing, make it ideal for interactive presentations as well as collaborative workspaces.

Panasonic PT-CMZ50 Ultra-Short Throw Laser Projector: Getting Started

Getting started with the Panasonic PT-CMZ50 was easy – there was nothing to put together, I just had to put in the batteries in the remote and plug it into a power source. I had no problem picking up and moving the unit around as it’s fairly lightweight and easy to handle, and not too large to fit on a table or desk. I really like the optional wall mount that comes fully assembled for quick and easy installation.

I found the projector startup cycle to be very fast, and since this is a laser projector I did not have to wait for the unit to warm up to see the full brightness of the image. I was very impressed with the image quality as well as the features for image correction and digital zoom. I placed the projector about an inch away from the display surface and it produced a very sharp 80-inch image. I had little to no shadowing on the image at close distance, and glare was not an issue at all due to its proximity to the wall. I also tested the unit’s ability to project a smaller image and it was easy to adjust to produce a sharp image.

Along with the ample amount of inputs, the CMZ50 has an HDMI output to connect a second projector. With this setup I can set these to sync with one another so the images match from a single source. This is great for large lecture halls or meeting rooms.

Panasonic PT-CMZ50 Ultra-Short Throw Laser Projector: Best Features

Brightness and clarity: The projector boasts a 3,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 5,200 ISO lumens for clear images even in well-lit rooms

The variety of input and output connections, including 4K and LAN connectivity.

Long lifespan: The laser phosphor light source lasts up to 20,000 hours (or 24,000 hours in Eco mode), which significantly reduces maintenance costs

Resolution: The WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution provides sharp and detailed images

Quiet operation: Operating at just 35 dB (26 dB in Eco mode), the projector runs quietly, minimizing distractions during use

Compatibility with Crestron, AMX, and Qsys control solutions via RS-232

Filters can be cleaned twice before needing to be replaced

Panasonic PT-CMZ50 Ultra-Short Throw Laser Projector: Pricing

The MSRP is around $3,000. Although it is quite portable, the additional ceiling mount, which Panasonic states take about 15 minutes to install, is a great option. Its compatibility with third party applications, networking capability for monitoring and control, as well as being able to connect two projectors together makes this a great choice for higher ed environments as well as large venues in the K-12 space.

Educator Edtech Reviews

The ScreenBeam 1000 EDU Gen 2 is a smart device tailored for modern K-12 classrooms. It features intuitive wireless screen sharing and an integrated collaborative whiteboard application, which together boost teacher and student engagement for improved learning outcomes

ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display: Getting Started

I found getting started with the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display very straightforward. When I opened the box everything was very neatly packed with a welcome guide on top that has a QR code to scan for directions on setting up the device.

The ScreenBeam device is surprisingly very small for all it can do; it's no bigger than a wireless access point you would see hanging from the ceiling in your classroom. It came with a power cable as well as a three-foot HDMI cable and magnetic mount. The ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 has several ports in the back: one ethernet connection, two USB 2.0, and one USB 3.0, as well as 3.5 mm audio out so it can connect to an external audio source.

Once everything was unpacked, I followed the included QR code to the Quick Start guide. A full manual is also available for more advanced setup. I connected the ScreenBeam to power as well as the HDMI on my display, and my wifi network. For use with an interactive display and the included interactive whiteboard software, I would also connect a USB cable from the back of the device to my display.

The ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display gave me a variety of options to display a device. Users can connect directly from any Miracast, Airplay, or Google Cast device. I could also connect it to my local wifi or an existing LAN connection on my school's local network.

Once set, all I needed to do was select the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 receiver I was ready. Since the ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 is device-agnostic you can connect with any Windows 10/11, Android v4.2, Mac V10.10, iOS v9.0, or Chrome OS 2014, or newer devices.

ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display: Best Features

The ability to wirelessly connect and display up to four student devices simultaneously regardless of the platform.

The optional license purchase for Orchestrate by ScreenBeam, which provides more control over and monitoring of my student devices as well as the content being shared.

The built-in and easy to use interactive whiteboard program, which utilizes the touch capability of an interactive flat panel.

The included Central Management System (CMS), which not only manages and updates your fleet of ScreenBeam devices but also gives you the ability to use the central alert feature to send alerts to all ScreenBeam devices and displays across your campus, or to use as digital signage players to keep everyone up-to-date and display important messages.

The option to extend or mirror your screen upon connection.

Advanced network and security features.

All the features and software are included with your purchase, including updates.

ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display: Pricing

The MSRP is around $500 - contact ScreenBeam for a local reseller for pricing.

ScreenBeam 1000 Gen 2 Wireless Display: Key Takeaways

The ScreenBeam 1000 EDU Gen 2 with its app-free screen sharing eliminates the need for any other hardware or software other than the device itself. The connection is seamless and fast with no noticeable lag. Teachers, students, and guests can use a variety of connection methods, including local wifi, Miracast, Airplay, and GoogleCast. Options are also available for peer-to-peer wifi direct and infrastructure connectivity.

The new Whiteboard by ScreenBeam app enhances collaborative interactivity without the need for other device connections. It runs directly on the ScreenBeam device and can be launched from any USB connected interactive flat panel.

Overall, the ScreenBeam 1000 EDU Gen 2 provides an affordable, centrally manageable, and user-friendly experience for teachers and students. I think that this device will make both teachers and IT departments happy with its simplicity and performance.

Educator Edtech Review

BenQ Board Pro RP04 interactive flat panels are the premium model of the very well-outfitted line of BenQ interactive panels and accessories. These boards are packed with the features educators need as well as tools that make these valuable for sharing in and out of the classroom.

Accessories and apps can be added to the system to further extend its capabilities. For instance, wide-angle web cameras for video conferencing, Android apps, and a variety of mounting options add up to make a very versatile and powerful system.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Getting Started

I found getting started with the RP04 panel very easy. Once I plugged it in and started it up, I ran some software updates and then set up my account. The RP04 offers several options for logging in to the board. I also had options for using an NFC tag, which can be supplied with the board or created by your IT Department, a QR code, or password.

I really liked being able to customize my account with the features that I use the most without worrying about someone else making changes. A guest account and other sign-in options can be set to give a guest presenter or substitute teacher the access they need.

The panel hardware is very well put together. The screen has an anti-glare and antimicrobial coating, as well as a built-in air ionizer to maintain the air quality near the board. Options are available to attach a Chromebox or Windows computer to the display to boost your productivity.

I like the other optional accessories such as the InstaShow Wireless presentation system by which I can share my screen and also control my computer screen wirelessly through a push of a button via a USB dongle. Other optional accessories include different types of HD and 4K cameras for meeting spaces, some of which offer PTZ and wide viewing angles as well as active noise cancellation and omni-directional microphones so I can move around and still be seen and heard clearly.

The board natively works with Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox cloud storage solutions. Being a G Suite for Education user, the native Android operating system made the file access and sharing very streamlined. The built-in BenQ EZWrite software is very user-friendly, and includes the option to use an unlimited canvas so myself and students can share ideas all in one place. I was able to import, edit, and share a variety of documents and resources right on the canvas. I could also share a live camera feed with a document, or video conferencing camera (not included). I found the InstaShare 2 software a very easy and smooth sharing experience both from my device and to other student devices.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Best Features

The BenQ Board Pro RP04 has a very rich feature set that I found I could use day-to-day without thinking there were too many. A standout is the quality of the 4K picture and the clarity of the sound, as well as the noise-canceling and speech-enhanced microphone array that could pick up my voice when I was more than 20 feet away from the board. The board also has up to 50 touch points so there's no worry about having multiple users at the board at once.

It also offers the ability to cast multiple devices with the InstaShare 2 software, with up to nine splits on the board for different users to share. Integrating this with the EZWrite 6.0 software makes for a powerful collaboration solution.

I also like that they leverage the large screen to be used for digital signage and message broadcasting. This feature allows users with the right permission to send text and video messages on demand.

Any IT department will also like this board because it has a device management solution built into it as well as the TeamViewer Technical Support app for remote support. Users can also log in using their Windows Active Directory infrastructure BenQ's account management system, and identity and access management allows IT staff to centralize user accounts and provision these in one place with single sign-on capabilities.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Pricing

The MSRP of the boards depends on size and accessories. The 75” board that was tested has an MSRP around $4,400.

Contact BenQ Education or your local BenQ dealer for a quote.

BenQ Board Pro RP04: Key Takeaways

Having the opportunity to use and test several different interactive panel solutions, I found the BenQ RP04 an excellent solution.
The HoverCam Orbit is an easy-to-setup wireless document camera with the features teachers need to deliver clear, rich, and engaging lessons without being tethered to their computer.

This device uses its own built-in wireless connectivity with a range of 100 feet to deliver a fast, nearly lossless video connection with virtually no lag. With no drivers to install or network settings to enter, it’s a plug-and-play solution that will make both teachers and your school's IT department happy.

HoverCam Orbit: Getting Started

Out of the box, my first impression of the HoverCam Orbit was how well it was put together. The hinges moved smoothly yet had enough resistance to let you know it will stay put once positioned. The base is sized and weighted to allow the long camera arm to be adjusted without worry of it falling over.

Once the camera was charged, I was able to get it up and running quickly. The only thing I needed to do was decide if I wanted to connect the wireless transmitter to my computer or display via the included USB-A, USB-C, or HDM cables. I also installed the free multi-platform compatible Flex 11 software.

I appreciated that the 13-megapixel camera assembly has a quality microphone and manual controls to switch on the four LED lights to illuminate the generous 13”x 21” work area. A wheel allows you to rotate the camera 90 degrees, plus there are buttons for auto-focus as well as taking snapshots or recordings. I was presented with the option to use the onboard 16-gigabyte SSD hard drive or the micro SD card slot and my own card to store lesson files. I found these all very valuable features since this is a wireless document camera.

The free downloadable Flex software is designed well and did not make me feel overwhelmed with an over complicated interface. It works on Windows, Mac, and Chrome devices.

I had controls to take photos and record videos, which is great to share with students for review and/or catchup. It also had a nice annotation tool set to draw or write over the displayed image or a digital whiteboard. In addition, you can rotate and/or flip the image. Every teacher needs this feature, especially when writing directly on a document under the camera.

HoverCam Orbit: Best Features

100 foot wireless range with 8-hour battery.

No network settings, wifi setup, or drivers needed.

Overall quality build with crisp 4K video and clear audio recording.

USB-A, USB-C, and HDMI connection options.

Free, platform agnostic; HoverCam Flex software.

Natively supports all video meeting platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.

HoverCam Orbit: Price

MSRP $629

Visit HoverCam for more information.

Key Takeaways

I found the HoverCam Orbit an excellent hardware solution. It is a true plug-and-play document camera with a long life battery that frees teachers to move about their spaces to deliver lessons. The added flexibility to connect with the transmitter using the included USB-A, USB-C or HDMI cables allowed me to use a variety of display types and sizes. The Flex software further increases its value by making it not just a document camera but an annotation tool with picture-in-picture and lesson-recording features.

Ultimately, the HoverCam Orbit is a versatile and solidly built solution that can find a place on any teacher's desk.

Best Document Cameras for Teachers

Educator Edtech Reviews

Slooh provides students and teachers access to live feeds from real telescopes at some of the top viewing locations in the world. This includes locations in the Canary Islands and Chile as well as a new telescope in Australia slated to come online in early 2024.

I found real value in Slooh's educational resources, which are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I also liked the active community of experts and citizen science astronomers who helped me understand and do real astronomy as well as participate in live events. While doing my review I participated in “Quests” and “Star Parties.”

With the total solar eclipse coming in April, having a tool such as Slooh can help support student interest in astronomy and STEM topics.

Slooh: Getting Started

I found getting started with Slooh easy. Once logged in to my account, I was brought to my dashboard. The dashboard is the hub from which I can contribute to the community, share and view observations, schedule new or view past Missions, as well as join Quests and Slooh special events. A place to view my saved photos and those shared by the community is also available.

Slooh has a large amount of astronomy content and I was a little overwhelmed at first, but the introductory video as well as their quality resources and support flattened the learning curve rather quickly. As an educator, I appreciated that Slooh is not about simulations, but allows students hands-on control of real telescopes. Also, the gamified learning features will further motivate students to continue their knowledge.

I can assign students Quests to teach about space and the universe in a real tangible way that goes beyond simulations and textbooks. Quests are NGSS-aligned guided activities designed to help students use their telescopes to explore space. The gamification of Quests allows students to earn Gravity Points and Badges for motivation and engagement.

Missions are 5- or 10-minute sessions on a telescope scheduled for a particular date and time when students or teachers can control one of their telescopes to explore and capture images of a particular object in the universe. Pre-set missions are also available that I could join as part of the community. All the images taken are saved in your account.

Slooh: Best Features

Slooh "Missions" that give live control of real telescopes in world-class locations to observe the universe in real-time.

The “Workspaces” feature integrates with Google Classroom and provides me with access and control of NGSS-aligned “Quests” that I can assign to students. As well as giving students the tools to create posters and animations to show understanding and share knowledge.

Gamification of learning to engage and motivate students to continue their learning independently.

The online community is a vibrant group of experts and passionate astronomy amateurs who share their expertise and answer questions.

Slooh: Pricing

Pricing varies depending on the plan selected and if you want a single, multiple-classroom license or one for your building or district. An advanced telescope control license for high school astronomy courses is also available.

To see more info or request a quote you can visit Slooh’s pricing page.

Slooh: Key Takeaways

Slooh provides students and teachers access to high-quality live telescopes and up-to-date data and imaging to bring the science of astronomy to life. I found it refreshing that I wasn’t just learning on my own, or with classmates if I was a student, but with a community that supports one another and shares resources.

Ultimately, Slooh gives teachers and students studying space STEM fun and real-life science experiences that will motivate them to explore the universe even more.

Best Astronomy Lessons & Activities

Teaching About the James Webb Space Telescope

The Canon MAXIFY GX4020 is a compact, high-volume all-in-one printer with refillable large-capacity ink tanks to meet the needs of a variety of users. It is a great addition to a small office or classroom with heavier printing, scanning, copying, and faxing needs, providing a cost-effective solution compared to the competition. The setup is fast and easy, with a one-page “getting started” sheet and onscreen guided instructions.

This is an efficiently designed personal/small-to-medium business (SMB) All-in-One (AIO) printer. The unit weighs in at just under 21 lbs., and with a footprint of 9.9” H x 15.8” W x 16.4” D, it is a compact unit. With the large refillable tanks and ample main and rear paper trays, I won’t find myself refilling either very often.

With a variety of paper-handling options and a fairly high-capacity main and top paper trays, I had a great amount of flexibility and time between refills. The GX4020 also has a single-sheet rear flip-down tray that allows a straight path through the machine in case I want to print on heavy stock paper. The automatic document feeder (ADF) can handle up to 35 sheets of standard (or 5 sheets of legal-size paper) for scanning, faxing, and copying.

Getting Started With The Canon MAXIFY GX4020

When I opened the box of the Canon MAXIFY GX4020 MegaTank printer I could immediately tell that Canon was thoughtful when designing this product. The instructions for unboxing and getting it connected were very simple to follow and made setup a breeze.

Once I plugged in the machine, the 2.7-inch touchscreen walked me through the set-up process, including filling the ink tanks, as well as hardwiring and setting up wifi. The entire process took about 20 minutes, and half of this time was spent waiting for the printer head adjustment process to complete.

I was able to easily add the printer to my mobile phone, via the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app, as well as on my PC and Chromebook using the operating system tools. Canon was also very generous with the starter ink included, which will give you about 5,000 pages of black and white as well as color. Don’t worry about putting the ink in the incorrect tanks, Canon “keyed” each tank and bottle to ensure the ink bottle can only fill the tank for which it belongs.

Canon MAXIFY GX4020 Best Features

During my testing I found the GX4020 to be a fast and reliable printer. The output is crisp and very color-accurate. Some of the features that stood out the most to me were:

Easy setup, intuitive user interface, and device compatibility.

Low printing costs of less than two cents per page, as per Canon.

High-capacity ink tanks to print up to 6,000 black or 14,000 color pages.

Pigment-based ink for crisp and durable prints.

The print head and maintenance cartridge are easily replaceable by the end user.

250 sheet main cassette, 100 sheet rear tray, and a rear flat feed tray that can print on stock up to 0.7 mm thick as well as fabric.

33,000-page monthly duty cycle.

Canon Maxify GX4020 Pricing

$449.99 for the printer

$123 for a complete set of replacement ink bottles

Canon Maxify GX4020 Key Takeaways

I found the Canon Maxify GX4020 a pleasure to use. During my testing, I had no issues with setup, connectivity, or compatibility. The printer starts up from sleep pretty fast and the print speeds are comparable to other inkjet printers in its class. The automatic document feeder runs very smoothly and, although does not automatically duplex, still can scan and print on both sides of the paper. I just needed to flip the stack over and scan/copy again, the machine figures out the page order automatically so there is no need to worry about page order.

If you are in an office environment or a classroom that needs an SMB printer, such as an art class, then this printer will meet your needs. It may not have a USB or NFC printing feature, but that will not be missed in a school environment. Plus, the low cost of ownership and user-replaceable parts will make district leaders' budgets happy too.

Educator Edtech Reviews

Best 3D Printers for Schools

Copyleaks AI Content Detector is an AI tool that analyzes content to detect plagiarism and AI-generated content. Copyleaks aids its users in detecting the originality of supplied content from a variety of sources, including uploaded files, copy/pasted text or URLs, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and even code files.

The scanned text will generate a content detection report that provides the user with a breakdown of its findings that will show what is AI- or human-generated content, along with references to sites from which it was taken. The scanned content can be stored and organized into folders and shared with others.

Copyleaks AI Content Detector: Getting Started

I was able to get started with Copyleaks very easily. Logging can be done with a username and password, or using your Google or Facebook login. Enterprise accounts can also sign in using single sign-on.

Once logged in I was brought to the dashboard, which presents all the features neatly and easily. On the left there is a toolbar to start a new scan, and I could see a list of my past scans, shared scans, and the text compare tool. If you are an organizational administrator in the program you will also have tools to manage users, etc.

To start a new scan I simply clicked on either the “Upload” or “New Scan” links. The interface lets me supply content to be scanned in a variety of formats including uploaded files, copy/pasted text or URLs, Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and even code files. If I need to upload multiple files at once, Copyleaks can handle that as well.

Once my content was loaded and selected for scanning, I was able to adjust the profile to search for AI content, plagiarism, or both. The sensitivity can be adjusted, and citing online sources can be activated to show me from where content was sourced. I also have the option to create and save custom scan profiles.

Once my scan was completed, the content was highlighted with different colors to show what had been detected as AI-generated, human-created, or plagiarized. On the right of the window was a toolbar with links to websites that matched the text found in the scan that could be plagiarized or paraphrased. Copyleaks allowed me to download a report with its findings as well.

Copyleaks AI Content Detector: Best Features

Copyleaks claims it has a higher than 98% accuracy rate and is continually adding more data to the model. In my testing, I uploaded several different examples of human and AI-generated text including word processing and PDF files, copied and pasted text, and infographics. Copyleaks did a very good job identifying AI, human, and paraphrased content.

After the scanning, I was given the option to download a professional-looking PDF report with the findings that were presented in the dashboard. I could share scan results with others by clicking the share button and adding their email address. Scans shared with me are stored in the “Shared with Me” folder.

Organizational users can create custom repositories so scans can be run against a custom database of data. This feature will be of great value to large educational institutions or organizations that output a lot of content.

Schools could also upload submitted student work to be scanned and checked for reuse. To test this feature I ran a portion of AI-generated text through an article spinner to see if it was able to identify it accurately. Copyleaks was able to identify the text as paraphrased AI content.

Copyleaks AI Content Detector: Pricing

Copyleaks offers individual and enterprise pricing, based on how many “credits” you purchase and if you want to pay monthly or annually. Three pricing levels are available, based on what features are made available. You can buy AI or plagiarism detection separately or, as a package.

The cost is based on credits purchased, with each credit equal to 250 words. The lowest number of credits that can be purchased is 1,200, or 300,000 words. That equates to AI + Plagiarism Detection for $13.99 per month. Enterprise pricing is available upon request.

Copyleaks AI Content Detector: Key Takeaways

Overall, I found Copyleaks to be very accurate. According to the Copyleaks FAQ page, the company has been ingesting content since 2015. The program currently can identify content from ChatGPT (including GPT-4), Google Bard, T5, and Jasper.

Copyleaks integrates with many popular learning management systems (LMS) and has fully customizable API integration. Extensions for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers are available.

Copyleaks secures data by being GDPR and SOC2 compliant, the highest levels of data security.

Ultimately, if you are searching for an AI tool to assist you in accurately identifying plagiarized or AI-generated content, Copyleaks is worth a look.

Educator Edtech Review: Magic School AI

Educator Edtech Review: ClassLink Cybersecurity Rubric

Explore a feast of education-focused AI tools! MagicSchool AI offers a transformative buffet of 67 AI tools, from professional support to choice boards and icebreakers, enhancing productivity for educators. The dashboard facilitates differentiated instruction, on-the-fly lesson content generation, and improved assessments.

I found MagicSchool AI to be a comprehensive solution, addressing diverse aspects of teaching and significantly enhancing teacher productivity.

MagicSchool AI: Getting Started in The Classroom

Need to craft a difficult email? Facing a new course assignment last minute? Looking to create a quiz on the fly, or help developing an IEP? The dashboard has a tool for each. Think of it as productivity on steroids, providing tools such as assessment generators, syllabus writers, and feedback creators.

Raina, the chatbot and AI instructional coach, guides users with specific prompts and examples.

MagicSchool AI: Best Features

Setting up a MagicSchool AI account is simple and comes with a free two-week trial of the Plus version. In no time at all, I was able to navigate the left-bar menu and explore the 60+ AI tools in the dashboard.

The interface is user-friendly and intuitive, and the one-stop dashboard offers a buffet of productivity, assessment, and innovation tools. Key tools include the Behavior Intervention Suggestions, Text Leveler or Summarizer, Student Work Feedback, or Report Card Comments generators. For some laughs, I explored the Joke Creator. There’s even a Coaching Plan generator - a game changer! Of note for district decision-makers is the commitment to privacy and FERPA compliance, the professional development options, platform integrations, and ongoing support.

I explored the open Google Drive of resources for PD. Training options include certification courses, a YouTube Channel, and canned presentations in the Google Drive. I liked how the training materials focus on AI best practices. One example is the “80/20” rule - in which AI generates 80% then humans take over the remaining 20% with analysis, critique, and word-smithing.

The integration with common platforms such as Microsoft, Google, or our organization’s LMS, is also an important feature for a district leader. Being able to “export” the AI-generated content to the district platform means not having to copy/paste.

Networking and support is always an important feature to review, and these are facilitated through the "Love" menu. Beyond the testimonials, tips, and tricks on the X feed (formerly Twitter) and a Facebook Group, is an in-app chat for support (Plus version only).

I was impressed with the customization, allowing me to organize tools and prompts, sort and filter output history, and improve searching with various “Actions.” I customized my dashboard, adding favorites, sorting resources, and filtering to provide me with a personalized workspace. Saving my prompts and output history was easy, but the number ranges from the last five (free version) to unlimited (Plus).

The search box uses "Actions," with options to improve and filter search prompts, such as "translate," "questions," "length," "summarize," and "custom." However, only “translate” is available in the free version. These additional options (e.g. questions, length, summarize, custom) cause me to think seriously about paying for “Plus.”

MagicSchool AI: Key Takeaways

For those still on the fence about AI, MagicSchool AI can transform the daily tasks of educators. The dashboard of tools provide educators with opportunities to target time-consuming tasks and improve productivity. With diverse applications, user-friendly interface, and commitment to privacy, MagicSchool AI seems like a great place to explore AI in a school-friendly environment.

Districts opening the door to AI can use the Enterprise version to give users more control over the AI experience -- choosing which AI tools to enable and integrating with Microsoft, Google, or an LMS. Besides the value to teachers as a productivity tool, a student version is next to launch providing students with a guided AI experience.

MagicSchool AI: Pricing

MagicSchool AI's pricing comprises three tiers: free users, MagicSchool Plus premium users, and MagicSchool Enterprise.

The free version offers limited features (e.g. Translate only), while Plus and Enterprise versions provide unlimited access to tools, full functionality of Raina, export features (e.g. Microsoft, Google, LMS), and robust support.

Plus is a single-user subscription (about $100 per year), while Enterprise caters to schools and districts with customization options for the dashboard.

MagicSchool AI: Price Comparison Table

Free Version

MagicSchool Plus (Premium User)

Magic School Enterprise (School or District)

Access to 60+ tools, Raina, and the Chrome extension.

All tools and export features, including integration with Microsoft, Google, and Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Enterprise version for schools or districts with organizational users.

Raina is limited to the “translate” feature.

Full functionality of Raina, including options to translate, modify, resources, differentiate, and customize prompts.

Raina plus Customizable dashboard for organizational needs.

Outputs limited to the last 5 generations.

Unlimited history of generations.

Unlimited history of generations.

No integration with Microsoft/Google/LMS

Integration with Microsoft/Google/LMS

Unlimited platform access, and integration with local platforms (e.g., Google, Microsoft, or an LMS).

No "Export" feature, only "Copy" option.

"Export" available

"Export" available

Support through the Facebook group.

Robust support system with an in-app chat feature beyond the Facebook User Group.

Provides access to professional development and a dedicated account manager.

Free

Single-user subscription costing around $12 per month or discounted to $100 per year.

Pricing based on student count, ranging between $1,000 and $2,000 during the pilot. Transitioning to a "by the student" model for tiered pricing at $3 - $4 per student.

MagicSchool AI: Conclusion

MagicSchool AI improves the lives of teachers, with more than 80 generative AI tools designed to ease the challenges faced by educators, and 50+ available for students. With more than 4 million users and 10,000 schools onboard, the platform is definitely gaining momentum in the K12 market.

Whether you are pro AI, on the fence, or hoping it will go away, MagicSchool AI will forever change educator productivity. Used by teachers to “take back their day” from tedious tasks that sideline our teaching, Magic School AI will change how we create an email, syllabus, assessment, or lesson plan. It is a great way to get started with AI using educationally focused tools.

Magic School AI Bonus: My Favorite Features

Some of my favorite productivity tools include the IEP Generator, the Syllabus Generator, and the Multiple Choice Assessment Generator. For my colleagues who have already jumped into Magic School AI, they were happy to add:

“I love how efficient it is to create rubrics.”

“Check out the YouTube Question generator to create discussion questions.”

“I create daily objectives to post in our Canvas LMS.”

“Using the lesson plan generator as a brainstorm for creating a new unit.”

“Creating vocabulary lists with definitions for my units of study is so fast!”

“I created a four day unit in maybe an hour.”

Educator Edtech Review: Walkabouts

The ClassLink Cybersecurity Rubric for Education is a tool created by a coalition of experts using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Framework, as well as other cybersecurity and privacy standards. Making sure to take into account the unique needs of education, the rubric provides school districts with the tools to self-assess their cybersecurity program.

The Cybersecurity Rubric for Education is free but educators can go a step further and take the certification course to earn a credential as a Certified Cybersecurity Rubric Evaluator (CCRE).

Cybersecurity Rubric: Getting Started

I found getting started with the Cybersecurity Rubric (CR) very straightforward. Since I am already a ClassLink user, I accessed the training by logging into my ClassLink account and clicking on the “ClassLink Academy” app. If you are not a ClassLink customer go to the Cybersecurity Rubric home page to read about the initiative and download the rubric. To further improve your skills, create a free CR Academy account to access the free training to best utilize the CR, or purchase the Certified Cybersecurity Rubric Evaluator (CCRE) training and exam.

Once my account was set, I started with the first course, “Learning How to Use the Cybersecurity Rubric.” This self-guided training lasts for approximately 2½ hours, with topics on cybersecurity awareness and evaluations, the rubric’s maturity levels, and how to do a self-evaluation for your school system. I completed the units and then was able to take the survey to earn a certificate to show I understood the CR and could use it to do self-evaluations. This certificate can be shared on your social feeds, such as LinkedIn.

I also took their more comprehensive course (approx. 3½ hrs.) to become a Certified Cybersecurity Rubric Evaluator (CCRE). This certification is more comprehensive and also has an exam at the end. It allows CCREs to provide third-party evaluations to school systems for a fee.

Cybersecurity Rubric: Best Features

ClassLink has created the Cybersecurity Coalition for Education, a collection of experts to develop the rubric and certification courses. They took the NIST Framework and distilled it down to a more workable and understandable form so school districts can best evaluate their cybersecurity postures. I found the rubric easy to understand, but I highly recommend you go through the free training on how to use it for best results.

I like the learning management system they have for the training modules, which is well laid out and easy to navigate. Since the training is self-paced, I could easily pick up where I left off. ClassLlink also provides training for all of their products, since I am a user I found this extra free training a big plus.

The CCR and CCRE training was very comprehensive. ClassLink uses a variety of techniques to deliver training, including video and interactive assessments. I was able to easily go back and review the content using the menus they listed on the left of each module.

Cybersecurity Rubric: Pricing

The Cybersecurity Rubric for Education and the training on how to use it for self-evaluation are free and can be found on their Cybersecurity Rubric website.

I also have gone through the training for certification as a Certified Cybersecurity Rubric Evaluator (CCRE). This training and access to the evaluation cost $99. Once I take and pass the assessment, I will have the credential to provide paid services using the rubric as a CCRE. This training gives me the knowledge and tools to assess other districts' cybersecurity programs and provide them with a report and next steps to help them improve. This certification comes with a credential and is good for three years.

Cybersecurity Rubric: Key Takeaways

Over time I have looked at many tools for assessing and improving cybersecurity. Some of the solutions were very comprehensive, but not completely relevant to my particular situation in a school district. Others were so complicated and technical that I found completion cumbersome and confusing.

ClassLink has taken one of the best, the NIST Framework, and put together both a tool and training that meets the specific needs of a school district technology leader. I applaud them for seeing the need and providing a solution that is well thought out and easy to implement.

Educator Edtech Review: Walkabouts

Walkabouts is an evidenced-based online learning platform for grades Pre-K to 2. It uses short, interactive videos to reinforce ELA/literacy and math skills through movement. These on-demand videos are designed to supplement instruction by using movement to reinforce learning, giving educationally based brain breaks. Walkabouts content are aligned to state standards as well as Head Start and NAEYC standards.

I found Walkabouts intuitive to use and engaging for students, and it would be welcome in any classroom.

Walkabouts: Getting Started in the Classroom

Creating a Walkabouts account is very easy and, once set up, I was able to begin using Walkabouts right away. I found the dashboard very intuitive – it features two menus, one for active movement Walkabouts and the other for “Walksheets,” downloadable worksheets which correlate to the Walkabouts video content.

I was able to go through the menus and select a Walkabout or Walksheet that fit my needs by simply just choosing the grade level, subject, subcategory, and lesson. A “recent” menu at the bottom provides quick access, and this tool provides me the ability to even create favorites to access my most-used content.

Each video has upbeat intro music and a fun song to get my students ready to move. The animation and characters are very well done and age-appropriate. Characters introduce the lesson and learning targets at the beginning of each video.

My students follow the character around as they move about the animated environment. As they move, they are asked to perform different kinesthetic movements between questions. The characters stop at various points in the video to introduce the next task. For example, in a math video, my students were asked to do a jumping jack or squat depending on their answer to the problem on the screen. The Walkabout characters are very encouraging, and do a very good job at explaining content.

Walkabouts: Best Features

Walkabouts has a menu at the right of the video screen that offers a variety of choices. I can make a video full-screen, which is perfect for presenting to an entire class. I can assign a video to a student, a class, or “team,” as well as save the content to a playlist, my favorites, or download an accompanying .PDF file to hand out. Additionally, there are buttons to open or email a link to an associated assessment

At the bottom are playback controls as well as choices so I can vary the volume and speed of the video. The speed setting only slows the speed of the lesson, the audio remains clear and easy to understand throughout.

The backend features of Walkabouts are very user-friendly and rich. Once my students and I have accounts, I can divide them into 'teams' that can be an entire class or a small group for differentiation.

Other teachers, learning coaches, and administrators can view notes and reports with data relating to student progress and usage, Furthermore, Walkabouts is compatible with Clever and ClassLink single sign-on solutions. This is especially valuable since the target grade levels could have challenges remembering login information.

All students using the program can be rostered in their classes through an automated process or manually via file uploads.

Walkabouts: Pricing

Pricing plans for Walkabouts are very competitive and budget friendly. These range from $29 per year for home or homeschool, $99 per year for single classrooms, $799 per year for Daycare/Pre-K, and $999 per year for an entire school grade Pre-K-2.

New videos are coming for grades 3-5 that are included in the “Entire School” plan.

Walkabouts: Key Takeaways

The Walkabouts video on-demand learning platform has done the work by providing myself and colleagues with an evidenced-based learning platform that is a fun and interactive way to teach math, language arts, and literacy skills both in-person and remotely.

The interface is very easy to use and has tools in intuitive locations that I found simple to access. The single sign-on, rostering, and differentiation features are invaluable and translate into saved instructional time.

With Walkabouts, students will not be able to stop themselves from getting up and moving when they hear the music and see the welcoming faces of the animated characters. Overall, this is a great value that could find a place in any elementary classroom.

Best Tools for Teachers

5 Ways Technology is Being Used in Phys Ed

To share your feedback and ideas on this article, consider joining our Tech & Learning online community here
