Silver Spring, MD (October 24, 2018) – Mississippi’s Columbia School District (CSD) announced today it has selected Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, as its partner in creating digital learning environments in its before and after school programs. By integrating Discovery Education’s award-winning digital content into its innovative X-STREAM extracurricular program, the Columbia School District is creating one-of-a-kind digital learning experiences that increase participating students’ love of learning.

CSD is committed to ensuring that all students reach their potential to become responsible, productive citizens through a quality K-12 education. To reach this goal, the district utilized Federal funds to create the X-STREAM program, which helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, particularly in reading, science, and math. Focusing on X-ing out learning gaps by providing eXplicit instruction and eXperiences in STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math), X-STREAM offers participants a broad array of enrichment activities that complement the students’ regular academic programs.

The X-STREAM before school programs “XL Period” operate five days per week for 45 minutes per day immediately before the regular school day. The X-STREAM after school programs “Power Hour” operate three days per week for two hours per day immediately following the regular school day. During the program hours, students have time to explore hands-on activities, complete individual assignments, or work collaboratively in small groups while acquiring 21 century skills. Beginning later this fall, X-STREAM will be supported by Discovery Education’s Streaming Plus digital content service.

Discovery Education Streaming Plus is an award-winning comprehensive digital service supplementing instruction across all K-12 curricular areas. The streaming service helps build students’ mastery in interpreting, understanding, and evaluating information. Students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, articles, videos, interactives, and more, and are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Toyota and Discovery Education Hosts Virtual Field Trip on Cars of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Vehicles

Immersive Educational Experience to Explore STEM Concepts set for Oct. 30

Plano, Texas and Silver Spring, Md. (Tuesday, October 23, 2018) – Rather than take a bus on a field trip, this October, Toyota and Discovery Education will bring the latest in automotive technology to students in their classrooms.

Toyota Research Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan is opening its doors to middle and high school students nationwide through a free virtual field trip. The live event, Cars of the Future: Artificial Intelligence and Automated Vehicles, will explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts through an in-class activity. Students will see how TRI is using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics to develop smarter automated vehicles. To assist teachers, an educator guide for the Virtual Field Trip is available for download.

Students invited to participate in ‘Opioid Crisis: Real People. Real Stories. Real Science.’ Virtual Field Trip on October 25

Part of Operation Prevention, the Nation’s Leading Prevention Education Program Available at No-Cost to Communities Nationwide

Silver Spring, Md. (Thursday, October 18, 2018) – The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Discovery Education are expanding Operation Prevention, the no-cost, standards-aligned, science-based initiative for parents, teachers and students, by introducing the 3 in a series of dynamic Virtual Field Trips. As part of DEA’s Red Ribbon Week campaign, Opioid Crisis: Real People. Real Stories. Real Science. will broadcast on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT, providing middle and high school students with information on how addiction starts through first-hand accounts from survivors of drug misuse. The immersive virtual event will also introduce students to the science behind addiction and underscore the impact of the opioid epidemic in communities that have been hardest hit.

“Drug addiction, just like any addiction, isn’t limited to one group of people or community,” said Sean Fearns, chief of community outreach, DEA. “‘Opioid Crisis: Real People. Real Stories. Real Science.’ is an extension of our efforts to combat the opioid epidemic one person at a time. During Opioid Crisis: Real People. Real Stories. Real Science., students nationwide will be transported from their classrooms to see the real faces of addiction and hear personal stories behind initial experimentation and movement from trial, to usage, to addiction. This virtual experience aims to connect students with real people who have been affected by the opioid epidemic in order to inspire a deeper understanding of the dangers of experimentation and the benefits of drug-free living.

The Virtual Field Trip will allow viewers to meet two retired professional football players who understand the pressures of playing football through pain and now focus their efforts on discussing alternative pain management options with young athletes. Students will also be introduced to a young musician who played at Carnegie Hall as a teenager before becoming addicted, whose efforts now support musicians in recovery. Finally, students will hear from a family that has been plagued for three generations by opioid addiction. Their collective stories of challenge, triumph and learning will underscore the far-reaching impact of the opioid crisis. No matter how addiction begins, recovery from addiction is a struggle.

-Florida One of 12 States to Approve the Science Techbook Through Its State Adoption Process-

Silver Spring, Md. (October 10, 2018) – Following a comprehensive review, Florida’s Commissioner of Education, as recommended by the state’s Instructional Materials Reviewers, recently approved the adoption of the award-winning Discovery Education Science Techbook for statewide use as a core instructional resource through its state adoption process. Discovery Education’s Techbooks are currently used by approximately 5.6 million students across the United States and Canada. (3of October of 2018)– The Chilean Ministry of Education(MINEDUC) has launched a new partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional learning for Primary and Secondary classrooms, supporting Me Conecto para Aprender (I Connect to Learn), an initiative of Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. Me Conecto para Aprender aims to close the gap in access to information technologies and promote their use across Chile by providing all of the country’s 7grade students a laptop computer, a year of internet access, and high-quality digital resources that encourage the use of the computer.

Following a thorough evaluation, MINEDUC selected Discovery Education to provide dynamic digital content to 1500 7grade students from 25 schools in the cities of Santiago and Melipilla during the 2018 and 2019 school years. In the latest phase of this partnership, Discovery Education will provide U-46 educators sustained, job-embedded professional learning that will help the district maximize their investment in educational technologies and accelerate the district’s efforts to transform its classrooms into dynamic digital learning environments.

Nearly 30 percent of School District U-46’s incredibly diverse student population are English Learners participating in the district’s acclaimed Dual Language program. MVCSD’s new collaboration with Discovery Education strengthens the district’s efforts to bring high quality STEM/STEAM learning experiences to students both in the district’s new Mt. Vernon STEAM Academy and classrooms districtwide.

Under the leadership of Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton, the Mount Vernon City School district is transforming their educational structure through the district’s bond referendum and the 20/20 Academic Vision strategic plan, which is guiding improvements to all MVCSD schools. Launched in 2009, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are digital textbooks for science, social studies and math that are aligned to rigorous standards, support a comprehensive curriculum, and are updated regularly at no cost. Delivering individualized resources that engage students in learning concepts, each Techbook includes rich digital assets such as virtual labs, video clips, hands-on activities, text, interactive glossaries, maps, and much more. Techbooks are compatible with any device, work in any instructional environment, and were used by more than 5.6 million students in the 2016-2017 school year.

(Thursday, June 21, 2018) – Young minds dream big, and when given the opportunity, they have the innate ability to spark change for the betterment of communities large and small. Today, Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) and 3M (@3M) announced 10 finalists from across America as part of its Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). This competition recognizes students in grades 6-8 who exude curiosity in the scientific process and inspire peers to solve the biggest challenges of the present and future.

Students were invited to submit short videos that describe a new invention or idea that could solve or impact an everyday problem. Of hundreds who entered, judges selected 10 finalists for their exceptional science acumen, spirit of innovation and ingenuity, and effective communication skills demonstrated in their entry videos. – Fifth Annual IWitness Video Challenge Inspires Students to Take Action to Counter Hate, Bias and Intolerance Nationwide –

Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, June 18, 2018) – In an effort to spark a social movement against hatred in all forms, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education – and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced the winners of the 2018 IWitness Video Challenge. A group of Chicago, Ill. students have inspired their classmates and community to embrace each other’s unique differences, specifically as it relates to the challenges of American immigrant communities. This year’s first-place winners of the short video contest, which invited students to be inspired by testimony of survivors of genocides and mass atrocities to make a positive contribution to their communities, are FanXuan Peng, Israel Gomez, Jennifer Tegegne, and Yannie Wang of Northside College Preparatory High School (Chicago Public Schools). The team will be generously donating their $5,000 grand prize to Northside’s “DREAMers & Allies Club” to be put towards educational initiatives and programming related to immigration.

Initiated by USC Shoah Foundation in 2013 and designed to provide actionable ways to promote empathy and empowerment while also challenging bias and intolerance, the 2018 IWitness Video Challenge encouraged students to make a change in communities nationwide. To participate in the contest, students first listened to the testimonies of survivors and witnesses of genocide. They then completed a research-based and standards-aligned activity, which inspired the development of community action projects to counter hate. To enter the Challenge, students were required to document their experiences in video essays for submission. This year’s winning video essay starts with the testimonies of two Holocaust survivors, Herman Cohn and Liesl Loeb, who immigrated to the United States as children.

“Following our reflection on the IWitness testimonies, we were propelled to improve our school community by helping immigrants avoid experiencing fear and discrimination,” said FanXuan Peng, Northside College Prep student and ‘IWitness Video Challenge’ winning team member. “The perception of America shouldn’t be of a divided country between natives and immigrants, but rather a melting pot where different ethnicities have endured some form of discrimination yet have thrived.”

After viewing the testimonies, FanXuan, Israel, Jennifer, and Yannie were inspired to create a project that brings awareness of the ongoing struggle immigrant students and their families face and tackles the important topic of discrimination in modern society.

The winning “Stronger Than Hate” project showcases an “immigration timeline” that connects historical experiences of bias, intolerance, and marginalization from one community to another, with the overall goal of demonstrating how discrimination is a collective struggle rather than a personal one. The project ultimately underscores how impacted communities have managed to lead fulfilling and successful lives after migrating to the United States.

“The students from Northside focused on the timely subjects of immigration and discrimination with great sensitivity,” said USC Shoah Foundation Director of Education Claudia Ramirez Wiedeman. “I was particularly impressed with how inclusive their work was by demonstrating that any group can be marginalized.”

This year’s contest – the fifth annual – offers prizes for scholarships and additional money for educators and schools. In all, $10,000 in prizes are being awarded courtesy of Ford Motor Co., which sponsors the event as part of its commitment to innovative educational outreach. The contest was open to middle and high school students across the U.S. and in Canada, with the exception of Quebec.

Also helping to make this year’s challenge successful was the Institute’s partner Discovery Education, which administered the challenge and helped maximize reach, and impact through its deep partnerships with school systems, administrators and educators worldwide.

In addition to splitting a $5,000 college scholarship, the winning students have secured a $2,500 grant for their school to be used to improve their community. Their teacher, Charles Milbert, will receive a $1,000 grant to help cultivate tolerance and empathy among the student body.

A $1,000 scholarship went to second-place winners Anthony McArdle, Kristian Morris, Shawnee Cranfill, and Trenton Grace of Northern High School in Dillburg, Pa (Northern York County School District). Their “Northern High School Pen Pal Project” aided students in leveraging the power of the pen to celebrate each other’s similarities instead of one another’s differences. After uniting project participants, students felt more connected and enjoyed getting to know students they otherwise may not have met. A $500 scholarship also went to Bernadette Carney, Emma Foursha, Kiera Songhurst, and Rebecca Bornstein from Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Moorestown, N.J. for their project “Acceptance,” which encouraged students to anonymously reveal their struggles and work together to publicly accept and celebrate their differences.

“Discovery Education’s collaboration with the USC Shoah Foundation connects students with powerful ways to promote equality and challenge bias through immersive, peer-to-peer educational experiences that motivate them to build a better future, said Lori McFarling, chief marketing officer and senior vice president, Discovery Education. “We congratulate this year’s IWitness Video Challenge winners for underscoring that discrimination and intolerance is not a personal struggle, but rather a collective one, and we applaud their thoughtful approach to discouraging bigotry in all its forms.”

The contest is based on one the more than 200 activities found in IWitness, USC Shoah Foundation’s free educational website. The website brings the human stories from the Institute’s Visual History Archive – the world’s largest repository of testimony from survivors and witnesses to the Holocaust and other genocides – to teachers and their students via engaging multimedia learning activities.

Last year’s winners inspired their fellow classmates to celebrate their diverse identities with a project called, “Who Are You? Embracing Identity in Our Community.”

Previous winners wrote kind notes to every student in their school, while the first winner documented her determination to stand up for undocumented workers after being moved by testimonies of Holocaust survivors who described their struggles being undocumented immigrants themselves.

“I have observed growth, development and an enhanced understanding of the importance of human rights and advocacy after encouraging my students to participate in the IWitness Video Challenge,” said Karen Wells from Midland High School in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas. “For many students, participating in the experience is transformative and has proven to be a catalyst for stronger relationships within our school community.”

The alignment of this popular series of digital professional learning resources to McREL’s model helps educators quickly chose the appropriate classroom tactics for aiding the acquisition and recall of information. McREL International is a non-profit, non-partisan education research and development organization that since 1966 has turned knowledge about what works in education into practical, effective guidance and training for teachers and education leaders across the U.S. and around the world.

Available in all Discovery Education Techbooksand Streamingservices, the Spotlight on Strategiesor SOS series offers creative, research-based instructional videos and supporting materials developed for teachers, by teachers. An example of an SOScan be found in a short video about theA-E-I-O-U strategy, through which students interpret information from images or videos they have viewed, write down their thoughts next to five descriptive categories, then pair-share their favorite parts. This strategy provides scaffolding that helps students look for and remember key ideas about the information presented in the video segment and provides a conversation structure for debriefing with classmates and reporting out.

Another SOSexample is the Table Top Texting strategy, which engages students in content by encouraging them to reflect and respond to videos or images they are presented by creating a written dialogue with their neighbor in the form of a “text thread.” In this way, students connect to digital content in a way they communicate on a daily basis as they are encouraged to think and respond on a higher level.

Teen Video Challenge to promote peer-to-peer dialogue about dangers of opioid misuse, award $10,000 grand prize and grant exclusive tour of DEA Training Academy

Washington, D.C. and Silver Spring Silver Spring, Md. – The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), DEA Educational Foundation and Discovery Education today announced 10 national Operation Prevention Video Challenge finalists. The Operation Prevention Video Challenge – a peer-to-peer platform for communicating messages about the dangers of opioid misuse – invites educators, students, teen advocates and communities to vote for the People’s Choice winner through May 15, 2018 at OperationPrevention.com. The ten finalists’ videos can be viewed here.

“We must educate youth about the dangerous risks of opioid misuse and addiction and engage them in the solution,” said Acting DEA Administrator Robert W. Patterson. “The DEA has seen firsthand the positive impact this program has had in our communities across the country and we are excited about engaging youth in this creative opportunity to communicate anti-opioid messages.”

An extension of Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, and the DEA’s Operation Prevention program, the video challenge encouraged teens to create a 30-60 second original public service announcement that alerts other students about the dangers of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use. Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, April 9, 2018) – Lockheed Martin is working on technologies that will make deep-space travel possible, like building the spacecraft that will go to Mars. As part of its Generation Beyond K-12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education initiative – developed in partnership with Discovery Education – the company on Friday announced the winners of a nationwide contest asking students to design a Mars-orbiting science lab and living spaces, or Mars Base Camp Habitation Module, that will dock with NASA’s Orion deep space spacecraft.

A roundtrip to Mars will take up to three years. In addition to basic necessities like food, water, oxygen and power, astronauts will need a habitat in which they can live comfortably and safely. The contest asked middle schoolers to submit their best design ideas for a Habitation Module that will provide all of the systems and living spaces that a crew needs for a long mission. The contest ran from August – December 2017 and students could enter as individuals or as a team.

The individual winner is from Skokie, Illinois and the team winners reside in Portland, Oregon. Their winning entries are available at: www.generationbeyondinschool.com.

“Lockheed Martin is already developing design concepts for a Mars Habitat, and the 2017 Generation Beyond Video Challenge Contest was a great opportunity to hear innovative new ideas from the next generation of engineers, builders and explorers who will help us get there,” said Tony Antonelli, a former NASA space shuttle pilot who heads advanced civil space programs for Lockheed Martin. “The goal of Generation Beyond is to spark student interest in STEM, and this contest is one of many ways we’re using exciting topics, like space travel, to engage students in learning.”

The Habitation Module is a component of Mars Base Camp, which is Lockheed Martin’s vision for the spacecraft that could one day take astronauts to the red planet. The Mars Base Camp concept would transport astronauts from Earth, via an orbiting gateway at the Moon, to a Mars-orbiting science laboratory where they can perform real-time scientific exploration, analyze Martian rock and soil samples, and confirm the ideal place to land humans on the surface in the 2030s.

Along with hosting video challenge contests in 2016 and 2017, the Generation Beyond program includes curriculum that is used in thousands of classrooms around the country, and the curriculum incorporates lesson plans and interactive content. Lockheed Martin also created an app called Mars Walk that simulates what it’s like to explore the surface of Mars.
