Onform is a video-based sports analysis and evaluation tool that's designed to help improve the performance of athletes. This is specifically aimed at coaches as a tool to add to their options when working with individuals and groups.

The idea is to offer an app-based way to record, analyze, and provide feedback on performances to athletes. As such, it can be affordable, easy to understand and use, both as a teacher and a coach.

The app works on Apple smartphones and tablets so you are able to vary the screen size as needed or work on personal devices.

This guide aims to clarify all that the Onform app offers so you can decide if it's right for you.

What is Onform?

Onform is an app that uses a device's camera and screen to record and show an athlete's performances in rich detail. But there's much more to it.

Onform is also all about feedback. It's one thing to record how an athlete is moving but quite another to then take steps to improve on that. The apps allows for editing and more so coaches can work with athletes by sharing edited videos for them to review and implement.

This is an iOS app only so you will require an iPhone or iPad, but if you have those available then the app is very easy to install and use. This brings professional level tools to everyone in a way that no longer requires lots of sensors and special cameras, as all that is built into the new Apple devices ready to be used by this app.

How does Onform work?

Onform can be downloaded and installed for free. This gives you a chance to get started before deciding if one of the paid plan options is right for you.

The app allows you, as a coach, to record an athlete -- for example throwing a shot put. It will overlay a wireframe of their body, that the company calls skeleton tracking, which more clearly exemplifies how they are moving through the action. You can then use this to show areas that could be improved.

The app allows you to edit and overlay video. Have a side-by-side of a poor example and a good example, for example. Or you can add in audio and written feedback to go with a video, making it ideal to share even when you're not with one another.

What are the best Onform features?

Onform lets you work at scale as you can setup groups and individuals then tag anyone you want in a video. This makes sharing and accessing that super simple both for the coach and the athletes. Create a running group, jumping group, throwing, and so on, to ensure you stay organized across track and field.

Everything is cloud-based so you don't need to worry about running out of space or having a very fast internet connection to share files. It also allows you to tag videos so that they are shared instantly with the athlete without you needing to actually send anything yourself.

The ability to draw on the screen is helpful as you can, for example, circle an arm at the wrong angle in one video and then draw an arrow to the correct technique with an arrow, as shown in the image.

How much does Onform cost?

Onform has a selection of pricing options for individuals, hospitals, coaches, and academic institutions. Not all prices are listed as they work on a quote-by-quote basis. You could just use the Coach tier in school if that suits your needs as it has very few limits.

To get an idea, the Coach tier is $29.99/month or $299/year, and this gets you unlimited clients, unlimited videos, and unlimited voiceovers and lessons. You have unlimited uploads and clients pay nothing to use this.

If you want three coach accounts there is an Academy tier, at $69.99/month or $699/year, where you get all the above only across three accounts.

Onform best tips and tricks

Work remotely
Have athletes check their accounts at home after training to get feedback, separate to the performance, so they can see in a settled mind state -- when it may sink in better than on the day.

Use skeletons
When back together, go over the skeleton video to assess specific parts of the body that can be tuned to move more efficiently next time.

Group smart
Use groups to also sectionalize by ability to so you can tailor your feedback detail to suit the needs of who you're focusing on.

New Teacher Starter Kit

Best Tools for Teachers

It uses short, interactive videos to reinforce ELA/literacy and math skills through movement. These on-demand videos are designed to supplement instruction by using movement to reinforce learning, giving educationally based brain breaks. Walkabouts content are aligned to state standards as well as Head Start and NAEYC standards.

I found Walkabouts intuitive to use and engaging for students, and it would be welcome in any classroom.

Walkabouts: Getting Started in the Classroom

Creating a Walkabouts account is very easy and, once set up, I was able to begin using Walkabouts right away. I found the dashboard very intuitive – it features two menus, one for active movement Walkabouts and the other for “Walksheets,” downloadable worksheets which correlate to the Walkabouts video content.

I was able to go through the menus and select a Walkabout or Walksheet that fit my needs by simply just choosing the grade level, subject, subcategory, and lesson. A “recent” menu at the bottom provides quick access, and this tool provides me the ability to even create favorites to access my most-used content.

Each video has upbeat intro music and a fun song to get my students ready to move. The animation and characters are very well done and age-appropriate. Characters introduce the lesson and learning targets at the beginning of each video.

My students follow the character around as they move about the animated environment. As they move, they are asked to perform different kinesthetic movements between questions. The characters stop at various points in the video to introduce the next task. For example, in a math video, my students were asked to do a jumping jack or squat depending on their answer to the problem on the screen. The Walkabout characters are very encouraging, and do a very good job at explaining content.

Walkabouts: Best Features

Walkabouts has a menu at the right of the video screen that offers a variety of choices. I can make a video full-screen, which is perfect for presenting to an entire class. I can assign a video to a student, a class, or “team,” as well as save the content to a playlist, my favorites, or download an accompanying .PDF file to hand out. Additionally, there are buttons to open or email a link to an associated assessment

At the bottom are playback controls as well as choices so I can vary the volume and speed of the video. The speed setting only slows the speed of the lesson, the audio remains clear and easy to understand throughout.

The backend features of Walkabouts are very user-friendly and rich. Once my students and I have accounts, I can divide them into 'teams' that can be an entire class or a small group for differentiation.

Other teachers, learning coaches, and administrators can view notes and reports with data relating to student progress and usage, Furthermore, Walkabouts is compatible with Clever and ClassLink single sign-on solutions. This is especially valuable since the target grade levels could have challenges remembering login information.

All students using the program can be rostered in their classes through an automated process or manually via file uploads.

Walkabouts: Pricing

Pricing plans for Walkabouts are very competitive and budget friendly. These range from $29 per year for home or homeschool, $99 per year for single classrooms, $799 per year for Daycare/Pre-K, and $999 per year for an entire school grade Pre-K-2.

New videos are coming for grades 3-5 that are included in the “Entire School” plan.

Walkabouts: Key Takeaways

The Walkabouts video on-demand learning platform has done the work by providing myself and colleagues with an evidenced-based learning platform that is a fun and interactive way to teach math, language arts, and literacy skills both in-person and remotely.

The interface is very easy to use and has tools in intuitive locations that I found simple to access. The single sign-on, rostering, and differentiation features are invaluable and translate into saved instructional time.

With Walkabouts, students will not be able to stop themselves from getting up and moving when they hear the music and see the welcoming faces of the animated characters. Overall, this is a great value that could find a place in any elementary classroom.

Best Tools for Teachers

5 Ways Technology is Being Used in Phys Ed

To share your feedback and ideas on this article, consider joining our Tech & Learning online community here

Hiveclass is the remedy to a generation of students who spend an average of six hours per day looking at a screen. This online platform wants to turn passive screen time into active.

By collating a huge library of video guidance on sports, Hiveclass aims to offer an engaging web-based way to get students moving and keep them more engaged in sports as part of their education.

Covering a variety of sports -- including volleyball, basketball, dance, hockey, soccer, and tennis -- this aims to appeal to a wide range of students. The idea is not only to improve performance for students who already play sports, but also to help draw in those who otherwise use their screen time for more passive watching.

Here's how Hiveclass works so you can decide if it's right for you.

What is Hiveclass?

Hiveclass is a web-based platform that offers guidance to children on how to play sports and improve as they progress through the system. The idea is to engage more kids in active screen time to get them moving rather than only passively watching.

Hiveclass covers a variety of sports that include basketball, dance, field hockey, fitness, lacrosse, self-defense, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. All that is available on the device of the student, so they can use this as and when they please.

Crucially, Hiveclass works with schools and libraries across the U.S. to provide these resources to students for free. Students can access these as and when they need, and teachers can use the tools to help students in and outside of class.

The guidance itself is given by athletes who specialize in their particular sport and through professionally shot videos. These are created with a curriculum-based approach and are available in English or Spanish. All of the content can be accessed via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC, anywhere with an internet connection.

How does Hiveclass work?

Hiveclass is available in two formats, one for educators and the other for libraries. This gets educators access to the wealth of digital content to teach with, all of which is set to standards as put forward by Shape America.

It also allows educators to track student progress to easily monitor performance and goals.

Students are able to access all the content they need via the platform, which can then be monitored by educators. Since the system requires a sign-in, once authorized on a device, a student can get access to that content anywhere via an internet connection. The idea being that any open space can be used by students to help them improve their athletic abilities, physical health, and overall wellness.

Most of the content is presented in follow-along style videos. But there is also a selection of questions and an SEL component to help students engage beyond the physical movement side of the practice.

What are the best Hiveclass features?

Hiveclass is built to curriculum standards as designed by a team of top physical educators, aligning it with the national standards set forth by Shape America.

Since all that is self-guided, it can allow students to progress without even being in class, or being with an educator in person. This is ideal for engaging students less comfortable in groups but also to help already engaged students to progress further on their own time.

The platform is built to be inclusive with content developed specifically for all students with accessibility features throughout the content. It is possible for kids and educators to search using filters that provide results that are tailored specifically to anyone with certain needs. Helpfully, you can also preset profiles, so at the tap of a button only content specific to that student will be displayed.

A Reading Hive is available that allows libraries working with the platform to showcase relevant books that students might want to borrow to learn more about an area or skill on which they are working.

How much does Hiveclass cost?

Hiveclass offers separate pricing for educators and libraries, with packages tailored specifically to each. These packages are also tailored to the scale and needs of the education institution in question.

As such all the pricing is on a quote-by-quote basis. You would need to make an inquiry with a representative of Hiveclass, who then will discuss your needs and work out a price.

The licenses of a library, for example, work on an annual basis with payments established on that level of commitment.

Hiveclass best tips and tricks

Use any space
Adapt to the space you have. In a classroom? Use a balloon instead of a ball to teach the basics of volleyball.

Go green
Have students use their local green space to work through part of an exercise and then feedback to the class how it was to go out into that space and exercise.

Reward the work
Set targets, and for students that exceed those, reward them with in class benefits, such as a rest during the tougher training that week for example.

What is Padlet and How Does it Work?

Best Digital Tools for Teachers

Phys ed teachers and students are giving new meaning to the term “screen time.”

Technology is increasingly being utilized as part of physical education classes, just as with any other subject, says David Daum, a professor of kinesiology at San Jose State University.

Daum shares five ways in which phys ed teachers are utilizing technology to help kids be more active and ultimately healthier and happier.

1. Heart Rate Monitors

Heart rate monitors that are now readily available provide an opportunity for phys ed teachers to teach students about exercise science. “They're really teaching students about their bodies and how hard they’re actually working,” says Daum, who is also the education specialist for HiveClass, a mobile platform that encourages kids to engage in physical activity with videos and other instructional materials.

Daum adds the devices can help students track aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, and the differences between the two.

2. Videos That Help Students Improve Form

Professional athletes have long analyzed videos to optimize performance, and increasingly, more and more students are utilizing video in a similar, if somewhat scaled back, manner.

“I've seen a lot more use of video, especially among high schoolers [who are] using cell phones to record each other to analyze their movement,” Daum says. “If we were partners, I would record you doing the badminton serve or something like that, then we would use a rubric and we'd evaluate our movement and provide feedback to each other.”

3. Videos That Teach New Skills and Exercises

Short instructional videos provide lots of opportunities for educators to get students up and moving, including demonstrations of sports and activities as well as providing advice for improving specific athletic skills and techniques. However, many of the free resources available on YouTube and elsewhere suffer from poor quality.

Part of what drew Daum to work with HiveClass was that he wanted to help create more age-appropriate, standards-aligned phys ed videos that educators could utilize for classrooms.

4. Promoting Accessibility

Video can also be a great way to inspire phys ed students from diverse cultures with diverse abilities and levels of fitness.

At HiveClass, Daum has helped advise the company to offer videos that feature students of different cultures, nationalities, body types, shapes, sizes, and abilities. Representation and modeling matters.

“When you get children performing the skill, it's relatable,” he says. “It's like, 'Oh, they can do it. I can do it.' I talk about that in my classes when I'm teaching people how to be teachers. You can demonstrate, yes, of course, but it seems more achievable, especially for younger students, when they can see a peer do it.”

5. Increasing Student Choice

High-quality instructional materials that are available online can better help teachers incorporate student choice into their classes. “We know that students value being able to make decisions about their own learning,” Daum says.

However, this isn’t always feasible for many phys ed instructors. “When a teacher is teaching 45 students or 60 students, it makes it logistically difficult for them to do certain things, especially around the idea of choice,” he says.

Resources such as HiveClass make incorporating choices doable. For example, students can be broken into groups and told to watch an instructional video focusing on one skill or exercise while the teacher roams between groups to provide additional instruction.

Ultimately, Daum says that increasing the quality of a school’s phys ed offerings can boost students’ ability to focus as well as their mental health.

“Physical education is for a lot of students the only physical activity they get in the school day,” Daum says. “It is the only subject area that has the potential to impact an entire school culture.”

An MD Turned High School Teacher’s Prescription to Improve School Mental Health

CDC: More Than 1 in 3 High Schoolers Experiencing Poor Mental Health. And as states loosen Covid-19 restrictions and kids get back to the classroom, gym and track, there's a new free digital toolkit to help coaches and teachers track the progress of students’ physical activity.

Marathon Kids Connect, from the nonprofit Marathon Kids, is a cloud-based Run Club management platform that provides a digital lap-tracking app along with educational resources and reporting capability. PE teachers scan student runners’ ID cards to upload their lap times and track progress through shareable impact reports. Additionally, online training videos and modules offer learning opportunities for students and coaches.

Kicking off on July 1, Run Club registration is free and not limited to a number of participants. In addition to unlimited Marathon Kids Connect access, each Marathon Kids welcome pack includes group tracking posters, a starter pack of the brand new sticker-based reward system, and online lesson plans for on-campus and at-home learning.

For more information on Marathon Kids and Marathon Kids Connect, visit marathonkids.org/connect.

Just because your school went remote doesn’t mean students need to ditch their phys ed momentum. If anything, during times of stress within the family and community, getting up and moving is critical to both body and mind. Even before coronavirus reared its ugly head, one PE educator knew how to get tech into his teaching game for remote phys ed classes.

Who: Derek Blyzwick, Elementary Physical Education Teacher

Where: Brooks/McCormick Elementary (Moon Area School District), PA

What: Using tech to enhance PE, in the classroom and at home.

I have always loved technology. Students now are consumed with tech, so showing them how tech and movement work together helps find common ground in creating a new generation of movers. Some of the ways I have incorporated tech into my classes are by using pedometers (students have to get so many steps to each class), projectors (for PowerPoint lessons on new sports and activities as well as Dance Videos), iPad to use Plickers (easy assessment app), and iMovie/KineMaster (for video editing).

I have a Dance Club in school and we record our dances. I then project them on the wall and use it as a station for students to dance too. Another really cool thing I use is barcode scanners. I use them for my running club. Each student gets a card with a barcode. They get their card scanned every time they complete a lap. I upload the stats onto an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of miles for each students. The students receive little tokens when they reach certain milestones (2 mile, 5k, 5 mile, etc.) I find tech and movement are so intertwined now that students gravitate toward technology that gets them moving.

Positive Results

Using the projector, I can go over a skill and then put a video up on the projector repeating that skill. I can then go around and either asses my students or help make corrections while everyone is still actively engaged. It is kind of like having another teacher in my class.

The pedometers have been a huge success. Students work so hard to get steps in my class to get the best possible grade. The students will even jog in place if they are waiting to perform a skill, keeping them active. They would have less of a tendency to move at that time without the tech motivation.

Biggest Challenge

One big obstacle is tech is not perfect. Things break down. Items need new parts. The big thing is staying ahead of it, with grants and self funding.

Pro Tips

Implement slowly. Adding an app to your phone, projecting a video on the wall, or playing around with iPads is a good start. Being completely dependent on tech for every part of your lesson can make it difficult when it doesn’t work. Striking a balance between traditional and tech is what I think works best.

I think the more you use tech, you develop a comfort with it which will make it easier to teach remotely. There is a real strong physical education presence on Twitter and YouTube where amazing teachers provide free resources.

Finding Funding

I have received a grant from Highmark High Five to purchase equipment for my schools, as well as funding from PTC at both of my schools.

I have also self-funded by selling apparel for my running club to purchase barcode scanners and charms.

Tech Tools

iPad apps

 - iMovie, kinemaster (video editing)

 - Interval Timer (timer for stations)

 - PowerPoint

 - Team Shake (make teams, randomizes teams)

Barcode Scanners - Opticon opn -2001

PE Central—online resource

Twitter/YouTube - great for finding the most recent and up-to-date physical education lessons.

Derek and his fellow Physical Education teacher-wife, Jolene, (and a certain mini-dance pro) offered some movement dance tutorials to keep students and their families moving during the district’s face-to-face instruction shut down due to the coronavirus.

Share these engaging lessons with your students:

High Hopes Dance

Boom Dance

Tightrope Dance

Entertainment's Here Dance

Dr Sue Black OBE kicked it off in The Arena this morning with a talk on Overcoming Challenges, Connecting People and Empowering Others. From leaving home at 16 and having 3 kids byt the age of 23 to saving Bletchley Park with Stephen Fry, meeting Princess Anne, the Queen and Prince Charles (who gave her her knighthood), Dr Black has had an incredible life and career. Her programme #TechMums gives tech training to mums across the country and she is now Professor of Computer Science at The University of Durham. She says that anyone can learn to code - it’s just like learning to read or write!

Dame Darcey Bussell OBE, creator of Diverse Dance MIX (DDMIX) got Bett moving at her talk with the whole audience on their feet joining her in some moves. Dame Darcey passionately believes that kids are meant to move and we’re letting them down if we don’t help them. With today’s low levels of participation in physical activity it’s important to harness not only team sports but inclusive, non competitive physical activity that matches the stimulation provided by the digital world.

The Edtech 50 - Celebrating Ambition; Inspiring Educators took place in the Arena. The panel, moderated by Ty Goddard, co-founder of The Education Foundation, consisted of Corrine Latham, Principal of Seaview Primary School and Nursery Unit, Belfast; Zaitoon Bukhari from Witton Park Academy, Blackburn; Claire Jones, Deputy Head of Layton Primary School, Blackpool and Kirsty Grundy, Principal and Trust Primary Director of Shireland Collegiate Academy. Ty started off by saying that we are seeing much more communication through tech for schools, teachers and learners. All four leaders had a lot to say about the use of technology at their schools. At Seaview they don’t see tech as an add-on but a necessity and they use Apple, Android, Google and Microsoft devices. At Witton Park Academy they believe technology is just a tool and that the real impact comes from how these tools are used to enhance teaching and learning. At Layton Primary School they start teaching coding at age 4 and incorporate coding language (if x then y) into everyday speech. At Shireland Collegiate Academy, they are looking to develop the next generation of change makers.

The Arena Keynote Highlight - Sugata Mitra on The Future of Learning

The visionary Professor of Educational Technology headed Friday afternoon’s keynote lineup. To a packed auditorium, he introduced his thinking around "The School in the Cloud." The approach is a combination of two tested practices: First, ‘The Granny Cloud’ - where volunteer educators connect with children around the world to give them opportunities to experience worlds far removed from their own as well as encouragement and admiration that is proven to help them thrive, and secondly, self-learning environments, where by using the internet students are able to find answers self-sufficiently. What they found was that schools in the cloud improve comprehension (in general, not just literacy), communication (the ability to demonstrate that you have comprehended) and computing (ability to solve a problem using the internet) in children.

Mitra’s most striking remarks drew a sharp focus on the current schooling system, the curriculum and in particular, the way that student’s knowledge and understanding is assessed - something he argued was firmly rooted in the past. He suggested that the use of internet and collaboration simply must be allowed during assessment and posed the question: "If we are using it 24/7, why is it that your child should not be able to just that too?" Summarised as a 'senseless and obsolete" system that we don’t need any more, Mitra instead proposed a future curriculum structured around the questions that we don’t know the answers to in order to foster the ability in children to solve problems "just in time" i.e. to find accurate and current answers to questions.

His parting thoughts on the future of learning drew us to encourage greater emphasis on fantasy rather than limited methods of looking at the future that are currently used in schools.

I embrace meeting students where they are at to engage them, but I had concerns about students being distracted instead of physically active. When I joined Twitter I began to see how tech could be harnessed to augment a PE program. I was able to observe tons of best practices from other PE teachers and share ideas with them. Tech was a key part of students’ lives and therefore was an integral part of their learning in school. A tech tool should only be used if it provides a more effective means to improve student learning, not just for the sake of swapping an old technology for a new one. In the end, tech became a regular part of my daily practice as a teacher and continues to be important to this day. — Victor Kass

Every cohort, every class is different. However, scaffolding it right from grade nine allows them to build the skills they need for the rest of the courses in our department. For example, they learn how to use iMovie during the creation of their Target Games videos in grade nine and then that skill is continued in Grade 10 Fitness, Grade 11 Net/Wall & Invasion/Territory focus courses, etc. Therefore, it is the students’ expectations that this is just part of the course when they enroll. Most kids have devices, but the department having iPads to fill the gaps (especially with iMovie) definitely helps create buy-in because there are no excuses. Assessments predicated on 21st century learning means that buy-in is essential for success. — Tyler Robinson

Positive Results

(Image credit: Jean Augustine Secondary School )

Our students are now able to obtain valuable, objective feedback about their personal fitness and movement competence. (We are also able to create an equitable platform to evaluate student learning.) With the use of video feedback, students can self-assess their performance during game play and analyze their strategies and tactics. They can demonstrate their learning regardless of athletic ability. Improved participation has followed, as students are focused on explaining/critiquing their decisions and choices during game play rather than comparing their athleticism with other students. Because of this newly leveled playing field, collaboration improved and enable all students to have a voice. Perhaps most importantly, tracking fitness test data allows students to adjust goals and see improvement no matter their original fitness level— a strong starting point to becoming healthy adults leading active lifestyles. — Lindsay Smockum

The Biggest Challenge

(Image credit: Jean Augustine Secondary School)

In our journey to engage modern learners some obstacles we've seen include: students who do not have access to devices, learning which angles are best to film, logging in/out of GAFE Ed Tool apps daily, learning to navigate the online platforms, wifi/privacy connectivity, the learning curve associated with new tech tools- vs - the timeline of use, and the correlation between student use of social media platforms and engaging with the curriculum in an effective way. We are pretty lucky to have the support to order and have access to equipment like pedometers, Chromebook carts, tripods and about 18 HPE Department iPads for our classes to use daily; for some of the students who may not have devices. We have also learned that long term if you guide, monitor and empower the students they will act responsibly- even with social media. Leadership roles help with the 'responsibility' of tracking, posting, filming, collaborating, and editing data to be used/shared. Students’ "tech IQ" is sometimes even higher than the teachers, letting them navigate the tech with relative ease. — Victor Kass

Finding Funding

(Image credit: Jean Augustine Secondary School)

At the beginning, I used my own personal devices (iPhone and iPad) to complete simple tasks, such as attendance or take video to show students. It did not take long for my school board, which is known to be very progressive pedagogically, to begin funding for wifi and tech devices, as well as provide access to cloud based learning tools such as Google Apps for Education. Students were also encouraged to “bring their own device” or BYOD. Our principal recognized the importance of this shift in educational pedagogy and she was happy to purchase iPads for the Physical Education Department teachers. Over the years, we continued to add class sets of iPads, chromebooks, and Fitbits, a TV screen hooked up to an Apple TV for airplay, and wireless speakers. The key in all of this was whole school wifi. Without that, the use of these forms of tech would have been very limited. — Victor Kass

Pro Tips

My advice for any educator attempting to incorporate technology into their program is to not be afraid to dive right in! While exercising 150 minutes a week has been found to have a preventive role in health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, etc., the report shows that exercise and sedentary living are mutually exclusive, and the benefits of exercise are not enough to combat the harmful effects of sitting for extended periods of six or more hours. Guess who spends six or more hours a day seated at their desks? Students. In fact, population-based studies have found that over 50% of the average person’s waking day is spent doing sedentary activities, such as watching television or using a computer. Time for a walk?

To view the full report visit http://annals.org/article.aspx
