Vernon City School District (MVCSD) today began a new three year partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms. MVCSD’s new collaboration with Discovery Education strengthens the district’s efforts to bring high quality STEM/STEAM learning experiences to students both in the district’s new Mt. Vernon STEAM Academy and classrooms districtwide.

-- Ten Young Inventors Compete for $25,000 and the Title of ‘America’s Top Young Scientist’ in the Nation’s Premier Science Competition –

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (Thursday, June 21, 2018) – Young minds dream big, and when given the opportunity, they have the innate ability to spark change for the betterment of communities large and small. Today, Discovery Education (@DiscoveryEd) and 3M (@3M) announced 10 finalists from across America as part of its Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge (#YoungScientist). This competition recognizes students in grades 6-8 who exude curiosity in the scientific process and inspire peers to solve the biggest challenges of the present and future.

Students were invited to submit short videos that describe a new invention or idea that could solve or impact an everyday problem. Of hundreds who entered, judges selected 10 finalists for their exceptional science acumen, spirit of innovation and ingenuity, and effective communication skills demonstrated in their entry videos. The finalists ̶ seven boys and three girls, ranging in ages from 12-14 ̶ include those from public and private schools all across the nation.

These practices offer students complete experience of the scientific process and how to apply it to solve a real-world problem. Throughout the program, each student will have access to resources and support provided by 3M and Discovery Education.

The winner will receive $25,000, a trip to watch the taping of a Discovery Network show and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

Students can access a variety of digital assets including images, primary source documents, podcasts, oral interviews, books on tape, articles, videos, and more, and are empowered to become content creators with a suite of content creation tools that help teachers and students safely and easily collaborate in real-time on virtual projects. Teacher resources include lesson plans, instructional strategies, and content collections organized around themes, as well as a collection of new STEM/STEAM resources designed to fuel a cultural shift in teaching and learning.

Discovery Education’s professional development services will also support OUSD’s Strategic Plan. Through OUSD’s STEAM Leader Academy, which is powered by Discovery Education’s STEM Leader Corp capacity building model, district administrators and teachers will learn new strategies and best practices for building and sustaining a culture of STEAM in their schools and guide them as they master new STEAM instructional approaches. With a focus on developing high-quality STEAM instruction, creating interdisciplinary lessons and units, and vertically aligning STEAM education school-wide, this initiative provides the robust professional development, job-embedded coaching, and administrative leadership support necessary to create centers of STEAM excellence.
