Reviews Praise Book as “Game Changer” for Implementing New Instructional Models

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 10, 2014 – Educators are looking for guidance as they embrace new instructional models, such as blended learning. To provide them with a blueprint for success, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) and Modern Teacher Press® today announced a co-publishing agreement and a new book, Teacher as Architect: Instructional Design and Delivery for the Modern Teacher, Second Edition, providing a blueprint for blended learning and 21st century curriculum design.

Co-authored by Shawn K. Smith, Ann M. Chavez and Garrett W. Seaman, this book takes readers on an engaging and enriching journey that defines highly-effective teaching and connects the isolated parts of instructional design and delivery into a coherent whole. Teacher as Architect, Second Edition, is a comprehensive guide for blended learning implementation as well as the integration of digital learning systems into classroom practice. The book provides educators at all levels with guidance for creating structures to organize, manage, store and collaborate with digital content and for discovering practical, useful tools for designing and delivering highly-effective instruction.

Early reviews have high praise for Teacher as Architect, Second Edition. Ryan Imbriale, executive director of the department of innovative learning for Baltimore County Public Schools and past ISTE Board member said, “Teacher as Architect is a game changer for anyone thinking about blended learning. Educators will find this book to be an absolute must for their library. Rarely does a book come along that blends research and explicit strategies to impact teaching and learning. Smith, Chavez and Seaman provide a practical and realistic blueprint to improve practice and move from understanding to action.”

Stuart Gothold, Ed.D., clinical professor at the University of Southern California and former superintendent of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, said, the book is “an incredibly timely and necessary contribution to meet a huge need in American Education – a scholarly, readable and spot-on treatment of our highest needs in today’s classrooms: giving our teachers the tools and skills they need to teach tomorrow’s children.”

The author-team brings deep expertise at all levels in K-12 schools, with a particular emphasis on curriculum and instruction and technology integration, to Teacher as Architect, Second Edition. Shawn K. Smith, Ed.D., is a founding partner and CEO of Modern Teacher. Smith is a former elementary and middle school teacher; assistant principal; principal; director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment; and, most recently, chief of schools for Chicago Public Schools. For the past 15 years, he served inside four different public education school systems in California and Illinois. He has also taught as an adjunct professor for several universities.

Ann M. Chavez, Ed.D., is a founding partner and chief academic officer of Modern Teacher. Chavez has 24 years of experience across all levels of public school service. As a teacher and principal, she worked in school districts throughout southern California. As a district leader, she most recently was the deputy of curriculum, instruction and assessment for a Chicago Public Schools’ regional area on the city’s southside.

Garrett Seaman is currently serving as a founding partner and executive director of educational operations for Modern Teacher. He spent the past eight years as a teacher and school district administrator, studying and perfecting instructional strategies around effectively integrating technology and media.
