Proliferation of online resources poses challenges and opportunities for postsecondary and K-12 education providers

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (Oct. 15, 2013) – In an era of digitization and online content, the roles of libraries and librarians are changing. Today’s students need more guidance in establishing strong information literacy skills, and library staff remain on the frontlines of instilling rigorous research practices in students. Jones eGlobal Library, builder of trusted digital libraries for lifelong learning, today released an infographic demonstrating that although the library is evolving, its role is more crucial than ever.

The infographic draws from statistics related to digital content, online researching and students’ research habits, painting a comprehensive picture of this “new day for learning research environments.”

“There’s a multitude of research and reference resources available to students in college and high school, but providing reliable access to all of that digital material can be challenging for both traditional and virtual institutions,” said Glenn Jones, CEO of eGlobal Library. “Educators need to provide credible resources for students, as well as teach them how to conduct academically meaningful research.”

Pew Internet research cited in the infographic reveals that 83 percent of secondary school teachers believe the amount of information available to students is overwhelming. And more than 90 percent agree that courses and content focused on digital literacy are essential in every curriculum.

Additional research highlights the importance of librarians in supporting students. A study in Pennsylvania shows that K-12 students in schools with full-time librarians are nearly three times as likely to have advanced writing scores as students without full-time support. College students also indicated that the ideal library solution combines high-tech and one-on-one interactions with librarians and school faculty.

“Research clearly demonstrates that students thrive with high-tech, high-touch solutions, and we partner with institutions to build digital libraries that couple technology with the support of institute faculty and eGlobal MLIS degreed librarians,” said Jones. “By combining tech with a human element, education providers put their students on the path to information literacy and academic success.”
