Boston — March 2, 2016 — Online courses have long been used for credit recovery; in the 2009-10 school year, more than 60 percent of digital courses were taken for credit recovery purposes, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The Virtual High School (VHS Inc.), a non-profit organization empowering schools with the industry’s best online learning programs, has enhanced online credit recovery by offering students at risk of falling behind or failing a course three types of Credit Recovery programs: flexible courses, summer school options and customized courses.
Motivated learners have the option of enrolling in one of VHS’ flexible courses to stay on track. The organization offers .5 credit classes and 1 credit classes, designed to take 4 and 8 weeks respectively. Courses include, but are not limited to English, Algebra, Geometry or Biology, can begin mid-semester, and are flexible, self-paced, teacher-facilitated classes. Enrollment in the VHS Flexible Courses program is on a rolling basis, and students progress through the coursework at their own pace, potentially completing their studies earlier or later than the assigned course end date.
“Our Flexible Credit Recovery Program is ideal for students who struggle in a traditional classroom, have fallen behind in their work, or have missed school due to illness or personal issues,” said Carol Ribeiro, President and CEO of VHS. “Like all VHS courses, the credit recovery classes are taught by highly-qualified online teachers who are certified in their subject areas. This flexible option reduces the likelihood of students dropping a course and losing valuable credit, not graduating with their class or not matriculating to the next grade level.”
VHS also offers four- and eight-week summer school courses for credit recovery. Courses are offered starting June 22 and are approved by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Additionally, VHS can exclusively design, manage and facilitate customized credit recovery programs to help a school or district comply with district or state mandates, as well as support student needs.
VHS will help educators gain further insight into what type of credit recovery offering will best serve their students through a free webinar on the subject on March 10 at 12:00 PM, EST. To register, interested educators and district leaders can go to http://bit.ly/24B2hDc.
