Boston — April 5, 2016The Virtual High School (VHS Inc.), a non-profit organization empowering schools with the industry’s best online learning programs, announced today that its SpaceStationAcademycourse has been honored as a Cool Tool finalist winner in the 2016 EdTech Digest Awards program.

The Cool Tool awards were awarded after a distinguished panel of industry influencers and veterans conducted this year’s evaluation proceedings. The finalists and winners are recognized as the best new, emerging and established technology solutions for education. This year’s program featured dozen of categories in addition to the best STEM learning solution, including best new product or services, academic gaming solutions, assessment programs, hardware products, leaders setting a trend and more.

“It's truly an honor to be recognized among our peers as having one of best STEM solutions available in the education market,” said Carol Ribeiro, President and CEO of VHS. “Offering relevant, innovative instructional solutions is our mission, and we believe immersive curriculum supporting STEM learning is one of the best ways to engage today’s digital learners.”

In the semester-long Space Station Academy course, middle school students embark on a virtual mission to the International Space Station (ISS) where they investigate key concepts in Earth science, life science, physical science, and engineering. This unique course, developed with support from the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), engages students in curriculum developed and supported by astronauts, scientists, and educators.

Throughout their mission, students consider what living and working on the ISS entails through creative and immersive activities. Students complete hands on investigations and design challenges while also engaging in interesting discussions. Looking back at Earth from space provides a powerful new perspective, and the innovations that make it happen naturally spark student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

"Shining a spotlight on the best and the brightest in the EdTech space reminds me of the tremendous paradigm shift our industry is experiencing. The evidence of technology’s transformative effect on matters of learning for students and educators, is so energizing,” said Victor Rivero, who oversees the program as Editor-in-Chief of EdTech Digest. “This year's program had some very stiff competition and hard decisions were made in selecting the winners. We're very proud to honor these cool tools, leaders and trendsetters in education technology.”
