Lakewood, NJ – Sept. 8, 2016 – Performance on any high-stakes reading challenge, whether a state-level summative assessment, a college entrance examination, or instructions for rescuing a computer hard drive, requires both reading strength and reading stamina. For students, these qualities don’t just appear suddenly. They are attributes that have to be built and reinforced over time.
Achieve3000 is sponsoring a live, interactive webinar, hosted by EdWeb, to help K-12 district leaders, school principals, curriculum and instructional specialists, and teacher leaders examine how best to improve these two aspects of reading. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, at 6:00 PM EDT and attendance is free; participants do need to pre-register.
During this live, interactive session, Dr. Douglas Fisher, professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University, will lead an exploration of the types of learning that enable students to persevere through complex (strength) or long (stamina) texts while thinking critically about what the author is saying and what they believe to be true.Dr. Fisher is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award.
During the webinar, he will examine:
▪ The importance of building reading stamina with text matched to a student’s individual reading level
▪Strategies for building reading strength with complex, grade-level texts and teacher-led direct instruction
▪The role of vocabulary development, and how knowledge of academic and cross-disciplinary terms impact reading ability
▪How extending literacy instruction to the content areas equips students to succeed across the entire curriculum
