Nationwide, Student Literacy Gains Surge Beyond Expectations After One Year with Achieve3000

Achieve3000, the Leader in Differentiated Instruction, reports literacy gains over and above the growth expected with typical instruction across all grades and among subgroups such as struggling readers, ELL students and intervention students. LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Nov. 28, 2016 – A nationwide Lexile study of more than 1.1 million students who used Achieve3000’s differentiated literacy solutions during the 2015-2016 school year found significant Lexile reading growth at every grade level, over and above what would be expected with typical instruction. In fact, students using the program with the recommended frequency made more than double their expected reading gains – increasing their Lexile reader measure by 153 points rather than the expected 70 points.

“It is exciting to see how Achieve3000 continues to impact such dramatic gains, particularly since they have translated into an 80 percent increase in students in the study reaching college and career readiness benchmarks. 300,000 students are now on track,” said Saki Dodelson, CEO and founder of Achieve3000.

Dodelson continued, “As states implement college and career readiness initiatives, educators are facing new challenges in helping students reach the ‘on-track’ reading levels required by today’s more rigorous standards. Our 15-year track record of success in accelerating reading gains demonstrates that Achieve3000 can help all students reach these higher levels of literacy, and we look forward to continuing to partner with schools and districts across the nation – and around the world – to help every child succeed in school and beyond.”

The study also disaggregated the results data by subgroups such as struggling readers (students with a Lexile score that was two or more grade levels below their actual enrolled grade level), English language learners, intervention students and enrichment students.

Intervention students achieved nearly double their expected gains, exceeding their expected Lexile growth by an average of 70 points.

Struggling readers achieved nearly double their expected literacy gains, exceeding their expected Lexile growth by an average of 73 points.

English language learners achieved more than double their expected gains, exceeding their expected Lexile growth by an average of 89 points.

Enrichment students achieved nearly three times their expected gains, exceeding their expected Lexile growth by an average of 101 points.

Another indicator of the Achieve3000 solutions’ positive effects is the proportion of students who logged in during after-school hours. Research on adolescent literacy suggests that the amount of reading that students do during out-of-school hours is an accurate predictor of their in-school academic achievement. The Lexile study found that 65 percent of Achieve3000 students logged in during after-school hours, including weekends and holidays. “That was an extremely heartening finding because it means that we have engaged students to the point that they are motivated to work on their skills, even without direct educator supervision,” said Dodelson. “More time on task has always been one of our primary goals.”

The Achieve3000 solutions examined in the study were KidBiz3000® for grades 2-5, TeenBiz3000® for grades 6-8, and Empower3000® for grades 9-12. Evaluators collected data on Lexile gains using the LevelSet™ assessment scores and usage records of students who had used the program for at least six months of the 2015-16 school year and, among other criteria, had completed LevelSet assessments at the beginning and end of that year. The LevelSet pre- and post-tests are based on the MetaMetrics® Lexile Framework for Reading, a scientific approach to reading and text measurement that has become the most widely adopted reading measure in use today.
