The awards will be presented during theEducation Business Forum in New York on Dec. 8-9.

This year, ETIN is delighted to announce the two recipients of the Friend of the Industry Award - Jerome K. Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science and Technology of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and Senator Angus King, Maine’s first Independent United States Senator. Both were selected for their contributions to advancing pedagogy and technology.

The Friend of the Industry Award was originally associated with the Education Industry Association (EIA). Since 1990, EIA has worked to expand business opportunities for education entrepreneurs of all sizes in preK-12 markets. Earlier this year, ETIN and EIA consolidated in a partnership to help forge a more powerful education trade association. ETIN is proud to present EIA’s signature award along with its Education Lifetime Achievement and Ed Tech Impact awards.

About Senator King

In January 2013, Angus King was sworn in as Maine’s first Independent United States Senator. He is a member of the Armed Services Committee, the Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Committee on the Budget and the Committee on Rules and Administration.

In 2013, when students across America faced the financial threat of a significant increase in their student loan interest rates, Senator King spearheaded the effort to draft and pass through both the Senate and House a compromise legislation that not only averted rate hikes, but also put the program on long-term stable financial footing. That hard-fought bipartisan solution, the Student Loan Certainty Act of 2013, has since been projected to save millions of students across the country more than $50 billion in interest payments.

From 1995 until 2003 Senator King served as the 72nd Governor of Maine. During his two terms, he focused on economic development and job creation. During his tenure, Governor King achieved significant reforms in education, including the deployment of the first statewide 1:1 computing initiative for public school students and teachers. He was re-elected in 1998 by one of the largest margins in Maine’s history. For more information on Senator King, visit: http://www.king.senate.gov/about/biography.
