3M AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION ANNOUNCE FIRST-EVER YOUNG SCIENTIST VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP

Today,  Discovery Education and 3M announced the launch of the first Young Scientist Global Virtual Field Trip for kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms with exclusive access to 3M Headquarters’ ‘World of Innovation’ in St. Paul, Minn.   Broadcast live on February 23, 2017, at 1 p.m. EST / 10 a.m. PST, classrooms can register to attend this unique event by visiting https://www.youngscientistlab.com/vft.  This Virtual Field Trip is part of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier competition recognizing scientific thinking and imagination in curious students in grades 5-8. This year, the Young Scientist Challenge celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Students Will Be Introduced to Top Scientists and Technologies at 3M’s World of Innovation; Co-Hosts include MythBusters: The Search’s Kyle Hill and 2015 Young Scientist Challenge Winner Hannah Herbst

Silver Spring, Md. and St. Paul, Minn. (Feb. 13, 2017) –Today, Discovery Education and 3M announced the launch of the first Young Scientist GlobalVirtual Field Trip for kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms with exclusive access to 3M Headquarters’ ‘World of Innovation’ in St. Paul, Minn. Broadcast live on February 23, 2017, at 1 p.m. EST / 10 a.m. PST, classrooms can register to attend this unique event by visiting https://www.youngscientistlab.com/vft. This Virtual Field Trip is part of the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s premier competition recognizing scientific thinking and imagination in curious students in grades 5-8. This year, the Young Scientist Challenge celebrates its 10th anniversary. 

During the 40-minute no-cost experience, students will be introduced to 3M scientists and engineers who are applying science to everyday life. 3M’s Vice President, New Platforms – Growth & Commercialization, Dr. Gayle Schueller, will kick off the event and introduce 3M scientists who will answer students’ questions live about STEM careers, scientific processes, and more.

Plus, the materials and scientific thinking behind various innovations will be highlighted ― from ion batteries that power smartphones to solar panel technologies. Students will see material that helps protect computers in a fire and learn how smart phones stay brighter, last longer and stay in one piece when you drop it.In addition, a number of hands-on experiments will be conducted, such as dunking a tablet in a special engineered liquid that can clean electronic components, douse fires and still allow you to still take a selfie.

Co-hosting the event is Kyle Hill, host of The Science Channel’s MythBusters: The Search, science editor at Nerdist.com, and host of YouTube’s Because Science.Joining him is16-year-oldHannah Herbst, the 2015 Young Scientist Challenge winner. Herbst was also a 2016 White House Science Fair Presenter, a United Nations Guest Speaker, and was recently profiled in Wired Magazine.

“The 3M World of Innovation is a dynamic backdrop that highlights how 3M science helps improve lives,” said Dr. Schueller. “This Virtual Field Trip is a natural extension of our partnership with Discovery Education, allowing 3M scientists to bring their excitement and passion for science directly into classrooms to inspire the next generation of inventors.”

“Virtual Field Trips like this help me introduce my class to locations and people we might otherwise not ever get the chance to meet,” said Jessica Donaldson, a teacher at Cane Bay Middle School (Moncks Corner, SC), in the Berkeley County School District. “I look forward to participating in this free event and explaining to my students how science really is a part of their everyday lives.”

NFL, AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION AND DISCOVERY EDUCATION HOST VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP LIVE FROM SUPER BOWL LI

The NFL and American Heart Association, together with Discovery Education, will host the first-ever AHA-NFL PLAY 60 Challenge Virtual Field Trip (VFT) live from Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 12 PM CT from the NFL Experience Driven by Genesis. The free virtual experience will be live-streamed in classrooms across the country, reaching thousands of students.
