Host Miles Brown, Star of ABC’s “Black-ish,” Meets with NBA Players and Executives to Showcase Exciting STEM Careers in Professional Basketball

Silver Spring, Md. (Apr. 28, 2017) – The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital education content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, today announced “Careers That Count: A Virtual Field Trip with the NBA”, designed to show middle and high school students how math comes to life through careers in basketball. Hosted by Miles Brown, star of ABC’s Black-ish and Jr. NBA Ambassador, “Careers that Count” launches for classrooms nationwide Thursday, May 4, with a live Twitter chat featuring NBA guests at 1 p.m. ET/ 10 a.m. PT.

A 30-minute virtual experience, “Careers That Count” takes students inside NBA headquarters and Madison Square Garden in New York to learn about real-world math careers through discussions with NBA professionals about how they put their math skills to work every day. Students then travel to the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club in Brooklyn, where Brooklyn Nets forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson demonstrates how he uses math to make quick, game-time decisions, and helps students learn how to calculate points per shot in an on-court demonstration.

The “Careers That Count: A Virtual Field Trip with the NBA” ‘roster’ includes:

  • Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Forward, Brooklyn Nets
  • KikiVanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, NBA
  • Doris Daif, Senior Vice President of Customer Data Strategy, NBA
  • Hao Meng, Director of Basketball Strategy, NBA
  • Zain Jafri, Database Analyst, New York Knicks

“We want students to know that anyone with a passion for math and sports can pursue a career in professional athletics,” said VanDeWeghe. “Basketball and numbers go hand-in-hand, and we’re excited for students to see how we utilize math on an everyday basis to improve our game.”

“Sports can be a powerful learning tool and I’m excited to have my classroom learn more about how NBA players and executives use math in their daily work,” said Rita Mortenson a teacher at Verona Area High School in the Verona Area School District.

The Virtual Field Trip is part of a multi-year partnership with the NBA and Discovery Education working to deepen middle and high school students’ engagement in mathematics nationwide. The collaboration harnesses students’ interest in professional basketball to help teach important mathematics concepts. Last fall, interactive math problems derived from NBA and WNBA game footage and statistics such as points, rebounds, assists and more, were integrated into Discovery Education’s  Math Techbook™. The latest addition to Discovery Education’s award-winning line of digital textbooks, the Math Techbook transforms the way students and teachers experience math through engaging instructional strategies and real-world problems that motivate and excite students with diverse learning styles. More than 3 million students across all 50 states and several Canadian provinces have access to the series.

“A solid foundation in math can set students on a path to pursue some of today's most exciting careers," said Lori McFarling, Senior Vice-President, Discovery Education. "We're proud to partner with the NBA to bring this dynamic event to classrooms nationwide in order to deepen understanding of how young people can apply what they are learning in the classroom to their lives beyond graduation."
