The Virtual High School Releases White Paper on the State of Computer Science Education and National Initiatives

Boston — Oct. 12, 2017 — The 21st century brings new questions for educators: How do we prepare our students for a rapidly changing workforce? How do we anticipate skills necessary for jobs that don’t yet exist? Research on the answers to those questions and the resulting focus on computing are presented in The Transformation of Computer Science Education, a new white paper from The Virtual High School(VHS, Inc.), a non-profit empowering schools with the industry’s best online learning programs.

Authored by Kim Spangenberg, Associate Dean of STEM at VHS, the white paper discusses the fact that groups such as the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), the College Board, and other industry leaders advocate for students to learn computing and computational thinking to be workforce ready. In 2015, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that computer and information technology occupations were projected to grow 12 percent by 2024, which is faster than the overall job growth average. According to Code.org, 71 percent of all new jobs in STEM are in computing, while only eight percent of all STEM graduates are in the computer science field. And that’s not even counting the number of occupations outside of STEM that require key computer science skills.

The white paper describes current initiatives for providing suitable curriculum for computing and computational thinking and includes several resources for helping advance student education in computer science. Among those resources are the Computer Science for All Initiative, the K-12 Computer Science Framework, corporate support from companies like Google and Microsoft. Readers will find links to all the resources and initiatives within the white paper.
