November 30, 2017 — Powered by Getting Smartand sponsored by eduInnovation, the Ask About AI: The Future of Work and Learning campaign is the result of a multi year research project investigating the implications and influence artificial intelligence (AI) will have on the lives and livelihoods of young people over the next several decades. The #AskAboutAI campaign includes a plethora of multi-media resources including blog posts, articles, podcasts, videos, and a white paper.
While AI will help address our most pressing problems, such as helping cure disease, unlocking clean energy, and creating valuable and affordable services, it has the potential to exacerbate gaps in society and pose existential threats. The Ask About AI campaign dives deep into three main topic areas.
1.Employment: The content describes future labor market impacts and required competencies.
2.Ethics and Impacts: Ask about AI identifies the social and civic implications of exponential technology—particularly the emerging issues that educators, parents and policymakers should begin addressing.
3.Education: Experts provide advice to educators, parents, and policymakers on knowledge, skills, and dispositions likely to be important in the automation economy.
In 2017, Tom Vander Ark, the Getting Smart team and eduInnovation partnered with a number of organizations, including the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, MIT Media Lab, MIT Teaching Systems Lab, Donnell Kay Foundation, Kauffman Foundation, Morgridge Family Foundation and The Grable Foundation, to bring together a wide variety of professionals, investors, and educators to discuss the future impact of AI and what steps we can take to educate today’s children for jobs that don’t exist yet.
“A year ago there was almost no discussion of AI in K-12 education. Given the likely benefits and potential problems, we think it is a good time to Ask About AI,” said Tom Vander Ark, Getting Smart CEO. “We spent the year traveling the world talking with professionals about the future of AI and have concluded it will have a significant impact on employment, learning, ethical issues, and more. We need to start a conversation around how we can shape a future that works for everyone.”
Getting Smart has compiled the research and feedback to create a white paper that defines the current AI capabilities and addresses what it means for the future of our students. The paper details eight clear recommendations on how the industry can prepare for the future with AI.
