Developed by Lexia Learning®, a Rosetta Stone® (NYSE:RST) company, Lexia Reading Core5 was the first cloud-based pre-K–5 technology-based reading program to provide explicit instruction that helps students achieve reading proficiency with increasingly challenging reading content.

Three years in the making and built upon Lexia’s research-proven, award-winning methodology, Lexia Reading Core5 expands the scope of the award-winning Lexia Reading® program by covering six areas of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, vocabulary, automaticity and comprehension for all abilities through grade five.

For administrators at E.L. Haynes Public Charter School, Lexia Reading Core5 is being added as an intervention resource for Tier II students in grades one through four. The school decided to implement the program after seeing older students make significant gains using Lexia’s program designed for remedial students in grades 6 and above, called Lexia Strategies™.

“We saw many of our struggling readers in grades six through eight gain almost two years of growth after just one year of using Lexia with fidelity in our blended learning literacy lab,” said Jeanne Chang, director of technology innovation. “What we like about Lexia is that it provides the opportunity to practice and develop foundational literacy skills such as decoding and phonics while building vocabulary, so students can access increasingly challenging texts. The reports give teachers strategic insights about the specific support students need to close individual skill gaps, and the program includes corresponding resources to facilitate this instruction.”

The design of Lexia Reading Core5 creates personalized learning paths for every student, whether struggling, on-level or needing more challenge, by providing explicit instruction and immediate corrective feedback. Students work independently in 18 unique levels of engaging, self-paced activities that take them on adventures around the world. Throughout the program, students interact with complex text as they develop critical literacy, listening and reading comprehension skills.

If a student struggles with a particular activity, he or she is presented with a scaffolded approach to mastering the relevant skill. If the student continues to struggle, he or she receives skill-specific, explicit instruction online, and if necessary, teacher-led instruction using Lexia’s scripted lesson materials. This personalized approach simplifies differentiated instruction, enabling at-risk students to close the gap more quickly and helping on-level and advanced students to continue to progress with support from their teacher as needed.

As students work in the program, Lexia’s proprietary technology found in its Assessment Without Testing®system gathers norm-referenced performance data—without stopping the flow of instruction to administer a test—and adjusts each student’s learning path accordingly. Teachers and administrators receive real-time reports on individual student progress toward mastery on the Common Core State Standards as well as reports indicating each student’s probability of meeting end-of-year, grade-level benchmarks. The system also generates individualized action plans recommending structured lessons and the proper intensity of instruction necessary to improve student performance and meet benchmarks.

Council Bluffs and Davenport the Latest Districts to Use Lexia’s Program to Meet Requirements of Chapter 62, Accelerate Reading Gains and Close Achievement Gaps   BOSTON (April 6, 2015) – By the end of 2017, the State of Iowa is requiring that third-graders must be reading at or above grade-level or they will face the prospect of an intensive summer school program or repeat the third grade. To meet this mandate and boost the performance of its struggling readers while improving the reading proficiency of all students, Council Bluffs Community School District (Iowa) has chosen to implement Lexia Reading® Core5®. In addition, Davenport Community School District has expanded its use of the research-proven reading program from use in grades K-3 to all students in grades K-5, district-wide. A number of schools in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids join a host of districts including West Burlington, Algona, Spencer, Albia, Mt. Ayre, and Oakland in either implementing Lexia Reading Core5 as part of their personalized reading program or broadly expanding their use of the program this year.

State to Provide Free Access to Technology-based Reading Instruction for Hundreds of Elementary Schools   BOSTON—June 18, 2013—The State of Kansas has established a two-year pilot program for improving reading outcomes using educational technology and has chosen to implement Lexia Reading Core5™ based on a review of stringent requirements. The state budget includes up to $6M in both 2014 and 2015 to implement the program, providing as many as 50,000 students in grades pre-K–5 with free access to Lexia Reading Core5. There is no cost to the schools chosen to participate in the pilot program as long as they meet minimum usage requirements. Lexia’s research-proven reading approach is currently used by approximately 20 percent of elementary schools throughout the state.
