UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Adelphi Elementary School is the inaugural winner of the Insight Schools Award from Pearson. This honor recognizes the school’s principal, teachers and staff for their commitment to preparing all students for college and careers and increasing student achievement. In winning this award Adelphi demonstrated verifiable results in college and career readiness (CCR) indicators in the categories of: academic achievement, CCR competencies, systems and programs, and classroom instruction.

When Dr. Jane Ennis became principal in 2008, Adelphi was struggling to meet Maryland’s increasingly higher expectations for student achievement and found there was limited parental engagement in the school. During this time, Dr. Ennis partnered with Pearson and committed to implementing a Pearson’s School Improvement Model and created a culture of high academic achievement for all students in an engaging and collaborative learning environment.

“I told my staff there will be no complaints on what they perceive as parental involvement because we cannot control what happens beyond these walls,” said Dr. Ennis. “However, we can control what happens during the six hours that our students are with us.”

Across five years, the school dedicated one day a month to continuous professional development for all teachers that directly impacted student achievement. With a strong focus on data, Dr. Ennis and faculty analyzed the work of their students, evaluated classroom practices, participated in study groups and engaged in long-term planning to advance their school.

During the planning process, the school transitioned from the Pearson’s School Improvement Model to Common Core and found great success in the transition, as the routines of their workshops provided structure for engaging Common Core in the classroom.

As a result of implementing collaborative planning, the Adelphi school environment quickly improved. A continuity of best classroom practices and high student expectations has been established, as well as renewed bond of commitment and partnership with parents.

Data from the Maryland State Assessment shows how Adelphi Elementary raised achievement in math and reading and maintained increased achievement levels. From 2007 to 2012, the percentage of students rated proficient or advanced increased by more than 26 percentage points in math and by almost 16 percentage points in reading. Since 2009, the school has demonstrated consistently high levels of performance in math, reaching 88 percent proficiency in 2012.

“Adelphi has been a fulfillment of my long-time heart’s desire and is such a blessing,” said Mr. Kamram, father of second grade Adelphi student Gurban. “We came from the Former Soviet Union and started our life from scratch. Having my son learn to speak English was a concern for me, but Adelphi Elementary and Dr. Ennis have done an amazing job with my son,” said Kamram.

“Dr. Ennis and her team at Adelphi Elementary School provide struggling schools everywhere with a powerful illustration of the path to achievement. Not only have their efforts resulted in substantial learning gains for their students, they have created a school community where high expectations are at the core of the culture and teachers, parents and students work together to ensure that all are successful,” said Alison Wagner, president, School Achievement Services at Pearson. “It is with deep admiration that we present them with the first Insight Schools Award.”

“I am blessed to have a great staff, and this award is a testament to our team’s hard work,” said Dr. Ennis. “Our team also includes our parents, who work side by side with us. There is no finish line – we will continue to collaborate to ensure that our students achieve at the highest possible levels.”

In addition to being recognized as a Pearson Insight School, Adelphi is also a MSDE Title I Superlative Highest Performing Reward School (2012), MSDE PBIS Gold Award recipient (2012) and a National Title I Distinguished School (2009).

Adelphi Elementary has more than 600 students. Eighty-six percent of those students receive free or reduced-price meals, and sixty-percent have a primary language that is not English.

Adelphi Elementary celebrated their academic accomplishments with a school-wide dance. Students danced to the “Kidz Bop” musical selections of “Eye of the Tiger”and “Gangnam Style” click here, to view photos.
