BOSTON — Aug. 14, 2014 — Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone® (NYSE:RST) company, today announced year-end results from the Kansas Reading Initiative in which the use of the Lexia Reading® Core5® program has outpaced expectations, driving substantial gains in student achievement. Among the students participating in the statewide initiative,over 11,000 students used Core5 at recommended levels during the 2013–2014 school year. Of those students, the percentage meeting their grade level benchmark increased from 45% to 70%.
More than 2,000 students were considered to be at-risk of not meeting grade level end-of-year benchmarks, but by the end of the school year, 99% of these struggling readers accelerated their reading skill acquisition by mastering more than one year of content, and 87% advanced two or more grade levels.
Results from the 2013–2014 school year were recently submitted to the state of Kansas detailing the year-end accomplishments of participating students. In the first year of the two-year Initiative, over 225 schools across the state participated in the Kansas Reading Initiative, a statewide grant that provides free access for schools to use the Lexia Reading Core5 program.
Ryan Cunningham, principal at Medicine Lodge Elementary School, was the first to apply for the grant. “I would recommend Lexia Reading Core5 to other educators unconditionally. It is the best and easiest program I've used for identifying and addressing areas of struggle,” said Cunningham. “Just two weeks after we started using the program, reading gaps began to close and it just kept getting better. In September, over half of our K–5 students were at-risk for reading failure, working one or more grade levels behind. By May, 95% of our students were working on skills at or above grade level and all of these students advanced at least one grade level or completed the entire Lexia Reading Core5 program by mastering their grade 5 skills.”
