Matching Grant Provides Schools with RoboKind Autism Robot

ATIA grant includes social robot with purchase of Robots4Austism therapy program

DALLAS (Jan. 29, 2014) – RoboKind, the world leader in social robotics, announces a matching partnership grant for attendees at the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference. With purchase of the Robots4Autism intervention program, participants will also receive a social robot, a saving of several thousand dollars. The program uses the humanoid robot to help children with autism develop life-long emotional and social skills.

Recently voted Most Innovative during the annual SIIA Innovation Incubator Program, RoboKind seeks school and therapy center partners to drive continued development. The matching grant will be available throughout the ATIA conference, Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 in Orlando, Fla. Participants must agree to provide user feedback surveys in order to establish eligibility for the RoboKind Matching Fund Partnership Program.

“We need schools that want to shape the future of special education,” said Fred Margolin, CEO of RoboKind. “We’ve seen incredible levels of engagement between the student and robot. We’d like to introduce the robot to many more students, and unleash the huge potential of social robotics in autism therapy.”

As the first humanoid robot purpose-built for autism intervention, the Robots4Autism robot displays and teaches natural, human-like facial expressions. The unique CompuCompassion software platform enables it to interact socially with children by reading and reacting to facial expressions, and maintaining conventional social eye contact. The Robots4Autism program pairs the robot with expert-developed curricula based on research-proven autism intervention methods.

“Robots4Autism offers a non-threatening platform for teaching and practicing social skills,” said Dr. Pamela Rollins, who was instrumental in developing the Robots4Autism curricula at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. “Children with autism don’t shy away from the interactions, as they often do with humans. And the robot engages the child in a way that keeps him or her on task for longer periods of time.”
