Filament Games Takes First Place at Games Learning Society Conference

MADISON, Wis. (June 26, 2014) – Filament Games, developer of digital teaching games, was awarded first place in the inaugural Games Learning Society (GLS) Showcase for their immersive science game, Reach for the Sun. As a central event during the tenth GLS Conference, the showcase (previously Education Arcade) acknowledges the best learning games in the education technology industry.

MADISON, Wis. (June 26, 2014)Filament Games, developer of digital teaching games, was awarded first place in the inaugural Games Learning Society (GLS) Showcase for their immersive science game, Reach for the Sun. As a central event during the tenth GLS Conference, the showcase (previously Education Arcade) acknowledges the best learning games in the education technology industry.

Designed by Abby Friesen, Game Designer at Filament Games, Reach for the Sun allows users to experience life as a flower that must grow, breed and thrive across the four seasons. Students learn about plant anatomy and processes by balancing resources such as starch, water and nutrients in order to grow and reproduce. The game is designed for use in an inclusive science classroom by a diverse range of students, and is aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

The GLS conference provides a forum for game researchers, game designers and educators from around the world to share their findings and design efforts. This year the conference hosted the first GLS Showcase, which recognizes the top academic and industry professionals in games and game-based learning. Nominees were asked to present their games to a panel of judges who selected the top five games in the showcase. Conference attendees then voted on their favorite game from the five finalists. Based on the results of that vote, the judges made the final selections. More than 20 learning games were featured in the showcase, with Reach for the Sun taking home the top prize.

Filament Games and Smithsonian Team Up for New App

Filament Games, award-winning developer of real teaching games, and the Smithsonian Science Education Center have partnered to develop Shutterbugs: Wiggle and Stomp. The free app is a teaching game that shows 3-to-5-year-old children how to describe movement and motion while virtually visiting exotic animals at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. Shutterbugs equips players with a virtual camera to take pictures of the animals as they perform motions. The game responds to individual players, adjusting the difficulty depending on the child’s progress. Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards, the app can be downloaded from the App Store for iPad and Google Play for Android users.
