Comprehensive Early Literacy Program Pairs Fiction/Informational Texts to Build Strong Young Readers
TEMECULA, Calif. – May 2, 2013 – "Flying Start to Literacy" from Okapi Educational Publishing is a finalist in the 2013 Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Awards. The comprehensive early literacy program is honored in the Supplemental Resources, Reading and Language Arts category.
The AEP Awards program, which has been in existence for over four decades, is the most prestigious and comprehensive recognition program in the learning resource community.
Hundreds of entries are submitted each year, which include print materials, digital learning tools, and professional development curricula. "Flying Start to Literacy" is one of three finalists in its field. Being named a finalist indicates a high quality product that has not only survived the three rounds of grueling review, but has managed to impress both educators and educational publishers along the way.
"At Okapi Educational Publishing, we are committed to providing children with programs that help them become strong readers and writers as well as develop a lifelong love of learning," said Pat Eastman, President. "It is an honor to have our early literacy program recognized in the prestigious Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Awards."
"Flying Start to Literacy" is ideal for early reading and intervention programs as well as for use with English language learners. Research-based, the program pairs fiction and informational texts to help students develop deep comprehension of topics. The paired books explore the same key concept in a fiction and an informational text, enabling students to think about the topic from different perspectives, facilitating a much deeper understanding. In addition, the paired books help young learners develop a more thorough grasp of vocabulary as well as build strong writing skills. These features of "Flying Start to Literacy" match the approach to building literacy skills delineated in the Common Core State Standards.
