Common Cents Online Exhibit This online exhibit asks you to select the correct image of an American penny from a bank of twelve images that look like a penny, eleven of which have minor changes in the details of their design. The exhibit, which has counters showing how many people select each image, shows that most people don't keep track of the details of the penny's design. People need enough information to be able to recognize a penny when they see one. But they don't need to remember the many details of the penny's design to distinguish it from a dime or quarter. This sort of experiment suggests that people are likely to remember only enough visual information about an object to let them recognize it in everyday life.
