Autoconnect to Servers in Macintosh OS X

Question: How can shared folders on the server automatically mount on the desktop when users login using Macintosh OS X?

The IT Guy says:

When a shared directory on a server is "mapped" to a drive letter in Windows, an option is provided to "reconnect at login." The same functionality can be achieved for Macintosh OS X users (version 10.1 and later) using the "Login Items" menu choice in System Preferences. After connecting to a server, add it to the favorites list, and then drag that favorite into the Login Items window of system preferences. Note that this method works only with AFP servers connected over AppleTalk or TCP/IP. SMB and NFS servers do not work with this method.

Apple has an article describing these methods on http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106729.
