Who Invented Electric Christmas Lights?

By now Christmas lights are adorning buildings and trees, both inside and out. How did this use of electric Christmas lights begin and how did the sale of these little twinkling reminders of the holiday season become a commercial success? Read a brief history of this much safer alternative to the use of candles to illuminate indoor Christmas trees. You’ll find pictures of early Christmas light sets, the first National Christmas Tree, and a photograph of the Capitol Christmas Tree in 2000, with a link to information about earlier Capitol Christmas Trees and the tradition of having a tree at the Capitol in addition to the more famous tree near the White House.
