Elementary and secondary schools registered with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) may apply to the Verizon Foundation for a grant to support programs that address literacy or domestic violence. Proposals for grants of more than $10,000 must include a project budget breakdown.

High school students engaged in projects related to world hunger, health, human rights, education, and so on can apply for a Global Action Award sponsored by NetAid. Honorees receive $5,000 for their higher education or a charitable cause of their choice.

Teachers who have worked in a comprehensive family literacy program for at least three years can apply for the Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award. The winner receives a $5,000 award for his or her program and a trip to the 16th Annual National Conference on Family Literacy in Orlando, Florida, to attend an awards ceremony.

Public and public charter schools where at least 50 percent of the students qualify for the federal free- or reduced-price lunch program can apply for the Excellence in Education Award Program sponsored bythe National Center for Urban School Transformation.The award includes $1,000 and travel costs for one school representative to attend a symposium in San Diego.
