Brief Description of the Site:
Just over 1400 students in grades K-12 attend the four schools that make up the Holden R-3 School District, located in Holden Missouri. This school district's Web site offers comprehensive information for staff, students, parents, and community members through a variety of easy-to-locate areas targeted to different audiences. Although it's a district Web site, it feels more like a multi-school Web site, where the focus is definitely on providing support to all members of the school community.
How to use the site:
The Educational Web Games and Teacher Tools areas immediately caught my eye. Students are encouraged to explore sites such as FunBrain, Magic School Bus, and NASA Kids. They are also directed to kid-safe browsing tools including Yahooligans and Searchasaurus. An extensive array of Teacher Tools are offered including new teacher and back to school information, links to educational research, lesson plans, curriculum guides, and support materials for technology-using teachers. Parents will find newsletters, samples of student work, photos of school activities, an area where some teachers are posting homework assignments, and a password protected list of grades for some courses. A nice resource is the R-3 Documents area where staff and parents can access district forms.
Note: School Site of the Week runs every Friday in this space. Submit your favorite school Web site to coordinator Susan Brooks-Young at Sjbrooks@aol.com.
