The recent catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico compels all of us to turn our attention to the sea. A new website, theSmithsonian Ocean Portal offers teachers, parents and kids best-in-class educational, scientific and intellectual assets from the Smithsonian and more than 20 environmental organizations.

The For Educators section provides teachers with activities, lessons and educational resources to bring the ocean to life for students and the Find Your Blue section offers simple actions that kids and families can take to become ocean stewards. The Portal was recently named the People’s Voice Winner for “Best Cultural Institution Website” in the 2010 Webby Awards competition.
