S.P.I.R.E.® Illustrated Decodable Readers Coming Soon for iPad®, Kindle and NOOK®

NEW ORLEANS – Oct. 22, 2012 – EPS, a division of School Specialty, launched its first eBooks for reading intervention today at the Virtual Schools Symposium in New Orleans. All 120 Illustrated Decodable Readers in its S.P.I.R.E.®(Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) reading intervention program will be available December 2012 for use on iPad®, Kindle and NOOK®.

S.P.I.R.E. is a comprehensive and multisensory reading intervention program that integrates phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, spelling and comprehension in a 10-step lesson plan especially designed for struggling readers. S.P.I.R.E. has been used throughout the country with great success by thousands of students who need a direct, systematic and sequential approach to reading. Based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, S.P.I.R.E. is now in its third edition, which incorporates the most recent research regarding best practices in reading and language arts instruction. The program incorporates many opportunities for practice, ensuring students experience continuous and visible success.

The program’s Illustrated Decodable Readers will soon be available as eBooks, providing students with a new and engaging practice opportunity. The books’ captivating topics and illustrations will appeal to young and reluctant readers. Books increase in difficulty, so there is a wide variety of challenge within the series. Both teachers and parents will find S.P.I.R.E. eBooks fit easily into their children’s daily routines, either at school as part of independent reading or fluency practice, and at home where parents and their children can read the books together. To assist teachers and parents, each title includes lists of target phonic concepts and sight words, as well as phonics skills the students may already know.

“Research has long demonstrated that the key to improving student reading ability is to provide access to a wide variety of interesting and engaging books and allow students to make personal choices about what they want to read,” said Rick Holden, President, EPS Literacy and Intervention, a division of School Specialty. “With today’s launch of our first eBooks for struggling readers, teachers can now leverage the power of tablets to help students practice their reading skills anywhere, anytime.”

EPS Literacy and Intervention's Innovative Math and Reading Intervention Tools Result in Impressive Gains for Houston-Area School

Ridgegate Elementary Sees Achievement Skyrocket and Enthusiasm for Learning SoarGREENVILLE, Wis. (April 24, 2013) – Last year, when Principal Lavanta Williams first came to Ridgegate Elementary School in Fort Bend, Texas, the school was considered “low performing” in math and reading proficiency, after failing to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for both subjects. He was in need of new ways to move his students forward and get them excited about the subjects they were learning. Today, state assessment tests show Ridgegate has met its AYP targets for both reading and math, with 90 percent and 86 percent of students meeting the standards respectively, with an increase of 12 percent in both subjects over the previous year. Principal Williams credits a customized intervention solution from EPS Literacy and Intervention, a division of School Specialty, for spurring these impressive gains in math and reading among his students.
