February is Black History Month, a good time to to celebrate the contributions made by African Americans to American history and culture. Think about how these contributions can be included in curriculum all year long. The author of this lesson
first describes the traditional approaches of including the African American experience into textbooks. She then gives some ways of refocusing lessons by using different perspectives in covering topics in history, first from the viewpoint of African Americans at specific times in history, then broadening that idea to look at the experiences of through the eyes of other minorities in history. By going beyond what is available in textbooks and using primary sources, your students will learn to appreciate history in a more accurate way.
