It used to be that urban legends took a few years to spread into a nationwide phenomenon. Now thanks to social media, they take a few weeks. Schools from New York to California have had to trigger their emergency notification systems thanks to these vague online references. More than a dozen students have been arrested. The hoax hysteria has even gone international, reaching the UK, Canada and Australia. Horror author legend @StephenKing has even gone so far as to take to Twitter to try and calm things down.
