Growth in Industry-Backed Certifications Signals Future of CTE

CEV Multimedia, producer of CTE curriculum resources, announces that students earned more than 5,000 industry-backed certifications in the 2016-17 school year through iCEV, the online resource for CTE where students can earn up to twelve industry-backed certifications.

The number of student certifications spans 197 school districts nationwide, representing an increase in the number of districts participating by 112 percent since the 2015-16 school year. Data also indicates the long-term increase and commitment of districts to offer and encourage students to earn certifications year over year.

During the 2016-17 school year, the most popular industry-backed certifications were the Southwest Airlines Professional Communications certification, the Benz School of Floral Design Principles of Floral Design certification and the Elanco Veterinary Medical Applications certification. The states earning the most certifications through iCEV are California, Texas and Kentucky.

That’s why Career and Technical Education (CTE) is evolving to incorporate industry-backed certifications that enable students to make the step from K-12 to career. To expose students to career-specific skills, and meet the needs of today’s economy, CEV Multimedia, the leading producer of CTE curriculum, is committing to a goal of awarding 10,000 industry-backed certifications to students by June 2018. The industry-backed certifications are offered through iCEV, an online learning platform for CTE. CEV Multimedia currently provides 12 certifications which are endorsed and developed in collaboration with companies and organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Bayer CropScience, Elanco and others. During the 2016-17 school year, CEV Multimedia awarded 5,000 certifications to students across 23 states. LUBBOCK, Texas (Oct. 2, 2017) – In 2015, the South Coast Region Agricultural Education Consortium received $5.7 million in grant funding from the California Careers Pathways Trust Program to strengthen Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction in their classrooms. By implementing iCEV, a CTE online learning platform from CEV Multimedia, students from the South Coast Region School District have earned over 1,400 industry-backed certifications in the last two years. Students from 10 schools have earned 11 different industry-backed certifications. For the sixth consecutive year, restaurant job growth will outpace the overall economy in 2016, adding more than 300,000 jobs this year according to the National Restaurant Association. To help students prepare to enter this burgeoning area of job growth, CEV Multimedia has collaborated with the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) to develop the Culinary Meat Selection and Cookery certification. The Culinary Meat Selection and Cookery certification equips students with the skills necessary to thrive in the culinary industry – specifically when selecting and preparing meat. As students gain in-depth knowledge of meat science and food safety practices like meat storage and handling, they are also exposed to a variety of relevant culinary techniques and industry standards. Certification lessons cover topics such as food palatability, proper knife care and use, preparation methods for different types of meat, poultry and seafood, defining and analyzing USDA grading standards and more. To earn the certification, students complete 10 modules and a 100-question final exam.
