On March 9, 1868, President Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial (opens in new tab) began in the US Senate. The trial was political in nature, calling out Johnson's violation of the Tenure of Office Act, lenient policies toward Reconstruction and vetoes of civil rights related acts.
