The History of Memorial Day

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first celebrated nationally on May 30 in 1868. In 1971 the observance of Memorial Day was changed to the last Monday in May, a day to honor all soldiers who died in all American wars. This site from American Memory has links to sites all through the Library of Congress that have connections to Memorial Day throughout the years. There is a general history of the course of observance of this special day along with links to music written in celebration, photographs of Memorial Day parades, and even information about how to display the American flag for the day.
