Survey: Teachers Challenged by Diverse Classroom Grade Levels, Long Hours

Front Row Education, Inc. recently conducted a survey of over 3,500 K-8 teachers. Finding include:

  • Over 93% of teachers have students in their classrooms that aren’t performing at grade level
  • 80% of teachers have students at least one grade behind, 70% have students two grades behind, and over a third have students three grade levels behind
  • 70% have students at least one grade level ahead

Additionally, teachers surveyed are spending many more hours beyond classroom time working:

  • 15% spend over 60 hours a week on the job
  • 40% spend 50-60 hours
  • 40% of teachers spend 40-50

Over 50% of teachers spend 3-5 hours planning each week and 21% spend more than 4 hours. In addition to their time, teachers are also using their own funds for their classrooms each year:

  • Nearly one third of teachers spend more than $500
  • Nearly two-thirds spend more than $300
  • 1 in 10 teachers spends over $1000
