Charter Schools Expand Use of Literacy Program

Charter Schools USA; Somerset Academy Miramar (Florida); and Chicago International Charter Schools (CICS) Irving Park, a Distinctive Schools campus, are among the most recent Charter Management Organizations and charter schools to renew and expand their use of the Lexia Reading Core5® literacy program.

For the 2016/17 school year, more than 73,000 charter school students in grades K–5 used the blended learning program to meet the demands of achieving reading competency. Students of all abilities made improvement in the program across the year, according to an end-of-year gains analysis showing:

  • When students used the program with fidelity, 86 percent advanced one or more grade levels in Core5
  • The percentage of students who were classified as working in or above grade level nearly doubled from 50 percent 91 percent by end-of-year
  • Two-thirds (66 percent) reached their grade-level benchmark in Core5

Lexia Reading Core5 is a technology-based program that aims to accelerate the development of fundamental literacy skills for students of all abilities in grades pre-K5. The program provides explicit, systematic instruction through personalized learning paths in six areas of reading. Embedded assessment technology predicts students’ year-end performance and provides ongoing norm-referenced and actionable data to help teachers prioritize and plan instruction with the offline instructional materials.
