In what will surely be campaign fodder for both parties this fall, President Obama yesterday announced a $1 billion program to support up to 10,000 master teachers in Science, Technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects around the country. The money is included in Obama's 2013 budget request. "They'll be an elite group of teachers leading their communities. They'd lead professional development [courses], mentorship activities, and would be regularly contributing new lesson plans and strategies to transform and improve science and math teaching," said education special advisor Roberto Rodriguez in a phone press conference.
