Shelby County Schools (SCS) is partnering with Discovery Education to provide students and families with free access to online learning resources through the Discovery Education Experience platform.

Discovery Education Experience offers over 190,000 activities and resources for K-12 students and teachers, based on core curriculum concepts and topics in Math, Science, Social Studies, ELA and Health. The site features videos, interactive activities and ready-to-use lessons.

Bridging the digital divide is a priority for districts across the nation, and SCS and Discovery Education recognize the inequities that exist for families without computers or internet access. As a way to address these challenges, Discovery Education ensures all virtual and digital platforms have full mobile compatibility. Since March 2020, there have been more than 460,000 views on the SCS website with nearly 70 percent of visitors using mobile devices to view instructional supports. Many of the Discovery Education videos will also broadcast on C19TV as well as on SCS partner television stations. Among the resources available for SCS educators and families through Discovery Education are:

  • Professional Learning Events—A series of online webinars and “Ask Me Anything” sessions with members of the Discovery Education team during which educators at all levels are encouraged to log on and ask questions about delivering remote instruction.
  • Instructional Supports— A variety of digital lesson activities in all subjects that teachers can assign to students created by members of the Discovery Educator Community-a global community of education professionals.
  • Grab & Go Lessons––Shelby County Schools’ educators now have access to ready-to-use, adaptable lessons and step-by-step guides, and can find complete collections of research-based strategies through the Instructional Inspiration channel. Also available are one-of-a-kind lessons activities and experiences through Discovery Education’s Virtual Field Trips.
  • Share with Students––All resources within Experience can be shared with students in a variety of ways, including email, web links/URLs, school learning management systems, social media, and other web-based classroom tools. Teachers can also use Studio, the safe creation and collaboration tool included in Experience, to assign content directly and track learning.

Join the District-wide virtual launch with Discovery Education on Monday, April 13, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. You can also watch the virtual session on C19TV, www.voiceofscs.com, or on the new Discovery Education section of the SCS instructional resources website. Also, Discovery Education will be hosting a series of webinars by grade level to help teachers navigate and understand the platform.
