The horse as we know it was not native to the Americas. After the die-out of the prehistoric horse at the end of the Pleistocene, modern horses did not reappear in North America until their introduction by the Spanish conquistadors in the late15th century. These magnificent creatures were embraced by Native Americans and their culture and lifestyles were changed by their relationship with the horse. During Native American Heritage Month, it is a time to read about the importance of horses in Native American cultures. On this site you’ll find many artifacts relating to the return of the horse, its impact on Native American tribes, the many ways the horse was reflected in Native American arts, and the continuing bond between Native American cultures and the horse.
