On February 20, 1792, George Washington signed the Postal Service Act which formally created the U.S. Postal Service. This site from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Postal Museum is filled with artifacts, maps, and commentary. Read about Owney, the scruffy mongrel, who traveled the country with mailbags, accumulating tags and tokens along the way. This online museum is filled with information and pictures of conveyances that have carried the mail through the years, toys based on the post office, and ways the mail has been processed.
